Perfect 10 For A Good Marriage Part II - Respect

Perfect 10 For A Good Marriage Part II - Respect In a marriage, respect entails being open to each other's viewpoint on various issues, and assimilating these thoughts in your shared lifestyle.

Good husbands don't grow on trees! Before that sets you rolling, at the expense of your other half - no judgments please about who's better-let me say that good wives don't come off shop shelves either.

As they say, it takes two to tango. Likewise, it takes two committed individuals to make a marriage enjoyable, and lasting. President of the LDS Church Gordon B Hinckley's prescription for matrimonial bliss -"plain, simple, everyday love and respect"- may sound a tad juvenile, but holds a world of meaning.

Love we already visited last time... so lets talk about respect.

Respect equals compromise

Two individuals who aren't perfect, but willing to work at it, and grow in the process build a good marriage. Respect plays a huge role in swiftly lifting this learning curve.

No husband and wife can agree on everything. However, these differences may be tided over if each is magnanimous enough to respect the others' opinion. Partners who respect each other are comfortable agreeing to disagree, so far as matters that do not need a solution. They feel no need to 'prove' their individual point of view.

When they have to figure a way out, they are willing to compromise. This means each partner has the opportunity to express his or her opinion, be heard and understood, and proposes a happy medium. Sometimes, his way; at other times, her way.

So what exactly is Respect?

Respect is
  • Agreeing to disagree.
  • Accepting another person's right to his or her own opinion.
  • Understanding that your way of doing things is NOT always the right way and certainly NOT the only way.
  • Accepting that your partner is different from you and that it is those very differences that make the whole greater than the sum of its parts.

Acceptance is a large part of respect.
