Looking Ahead 2006-2007
Wedding planning trends
|
Themes: Oriental. Japanese, Thai, Malaysian, and fusion. Instead of just one concept its time to blend... Japanese decor with Indonesian, Malaysian food with Thai decor etc...
A lot of people are opting for just a candle theme. In fact, this is very in this year in contrast to the country-centric look. Unique candles in animal prints or candles as props make the wedding look very chic. Another theme that is doing the rounds is the Lucknowi theme thanks to the return of Umrao Jaan.
Venues: Nothing new here. Mumbai in fact has a no new locations this year. Most people are sticking to 5 stars or clubs depending on the budgets. Moreover, as travel time in Mumbai is a big problem and the roads are in a bad condition most people are opting for locations close to their homes. Outside of Mumbai, the trend is much the same. Open grounds are preferred for big weddings to accommodate the large number of guests.
Cards: Now very few are going in for expensive cards. In fact most people opt for a balanced wedding invite. The preferred choice being eco-friendly paper. With so much awareness a lot of people are opting for cards made in hand-made paper and / or recycled paper. Another important detail not to overlook. The bulkiness of the card which can send the cost skyrocketing as most people send it out through a courier.
As for the gifts that accompany a card they are generally two or three grades of gifts. For close family and friends they are gold and silver coins. For distant relatives there will be lesser gifts. Currently, individually wrapped exotic chocolates are very much in demand. Also most people now don't accept wedding presents.
Events: The buzzword is Fun! Oodles of it. All events have to have an element of fun. And yes, Bollywood still rules. Currently it's the Nach baliye and Jhalak dikhlaja theme that is popular. As for the performing artistes, who are in demand everywhere, the favourites include: Himesh Reshammiya, to the Fame gurukul and Indian Idol winners who are raking in the moolah this year. As for the DJs, if cost is no concern than DJ Aqueel and Suketu are the preferred options.
Trousseau: People are now looking at wearability and usability. Tarun Tahiliani, Manish Malhotra, Rocky S, Ritu Kumar, Sabyasachi are some of the current favourites . In fact, designers are more than often very region centric. For example, a Delhiite may opt for a JJ Vallaya and a bride from Kolkatta may go for a MonaPali.
Jewellery: Diamonds and coluored stones are a big hit this year.
Honeymoon: Newly weds are looking at places closer to home due to the difficulty in travel. Also people prefer stand alone destinations like say Paris as against touring the whole of Europe. Bali, Phuket, Carribean, Maldives still remain all-time favourites. Most couples are opting for quieter places.
