Green Weddings: Travelling The Green Miles

 So the wedding and the reception are over. All the guests have left too. But your green trail still continues with your green honeymoon.
Packing Green:
You could opt for green coloured bags but that's not we mean by going green. Instead pick some eco-friendly luggage for your honeymoon.
- Use natural fibre bags for packing. Avoid plastic and polythene bags.
- Travel light. Avoid extraneous packaging. Pack just what is necessary.
- Disposable and inflammable goods should be avoided while packing.
- Use biodegradable and eco-friendly cleaning agents and soaps instead.
Getting The Green Light For Take Off:
So your bags are packed and you are ready to go. But before you leave on that jet plane ensure that the airlines you are travelling by has an environmental policy. Airplanes often have hefty greenhouse gas emissions, which contribute greatly to global warming and consume large quantities of fuel. However there are airlines, which have also won awards for their environmental friendliness.
We understand that you cannot directly affect an airlines' environmental policy. However, by refusing to patronize non-green airlines, you can indirectly pressurize them to be more environmentally conscious.
If you are not in a hurry and are not travelling to a far away location you may opt for train instead of air travel. Avoid luxury cruise ships as they may involve overuse of resources," advices environmentalist Anand Pendharkar.
Green Hotels:
Instead of a luxurious five-starred resort look for an eco-friendly (green) hotel. A green hotel saves energy and reduces waste without compromising on a comfortable stay.
- A green hotel may be having renewable energy sources such as biomass, small hydro, solar, wind, geothermal, tidal energy and photovoltaic conversion systems. There may be compostable disposals.
- Organic cottons may be used for bedding, curtains and carpets.
- A vegetarian and organic food section should be on the menu card.
- There may be a health spa to rejuvenate. Ashrams are often eco-friendly resorts.
Jungle resorts give you the golden opportunity to dwell amidst a typical jungle ambience. Popular wildlife sanctuaries like Bandhavgarh National Park, Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, Corbett National Park and Kanha National Park have eco lodges and jungle resorts.
Eco-Tourism:
Go for an eco-tour. Eco-tourism or ecological tourism concentrates on touring places of local culture, wilderness adventures, volunteering and travel to destinations where flora, fauna, and cultural heritage are the main attractions. Eco-tourism aims at observing wildlife, learning about the environment and the promotion of the understanding and conservation of the environment. Eco-tourism activities include mountaineering; rock climbing, trekking, mountain biking, nature walking, wildlife viewing and river rafting.
