Global Traditions You Can Include For Your Wedding

Global Traditions You Can Include For Your Wedding Weddings wherever they may take place have always been rich, cultural affairs. Every religion and every country has its own, unique traditions that have been handed down from generations.

Today, with cross-cultural weddings on the rise couples are looking for ways to make their special day unique. Why not make your day extra special by adapting and personalizing elements from traditions across the globe?

Time Honoured Traditions
  • According to a Chinese wedding tradition a couple should marry on the half-hour, rather than the top of the hour. This signifies that the couple begins their new lives together on an upswing note as the hands of the clock move upwards.
  • Wednesday seems to be the best day to get married in most countries representing health and wealth.

In Honour Of The Bride's Parents
  • A beautiful Jewish tradition honours the bride's mother when the last daughter is wed. She is crowned with a wreath of flowers and all others dance around her to the tune of a lively Yiddish song. Today this tradition includes the father and is celebrated at the last child's wedding.
  • In England, the groom presents the bride's father with a whale's tooth, which is said to be a symbol of status and wealth.
  • In Fijian weddings too, the groom gives his bride's father a gift symbolizing wealth and status.

Green Traditions
  • The wedding cake in Bermuda is a multi layered one and includes a small cedar tree on top. This tree is then planted in the couples' home and is supposed to grow with the love of the bride and groom.
  • In Holland and Switzerland too a pine tree, which is a symbol of fertility and luck, is planted outside the couple's house.
  • In Norway two fir trees are set on either side of the door to the couple's home until they are blessed with a child.

This custom of planting a tree to memorialise one's wedding is catching on all around the globe. Check out our series on Green Weddings for more on eco-friendly weddings.
