Cost effective wedding
Aditya asks,
I am planning to get married. We want to have a simple wedding but still keep all the essentials in mind. Can you suggest something?
Dear Aditya,
Simple weddings can be cost effective as well as have an understated elegance. Temple Weddings can be arranged with less emphasis on decor. Guest list can be cut down to minimum. Also, the functions can be combined. For eg - sangeet can be incorporated in the reception.
Bidaai ideas
Sheema asks,
Can you suggest some ideas of bidaai at my wedding. I had a doli in mind but one of my cousins just had that. So I want another unique idea. Can you suggest something different?
Dear Sheema,
Traditionally a doli is always most apt for the bidaai. Nowadays the doli is decorated very differently with artificial flowers, mirrors etc. You could use a carriage (closed or open) with horses as a unique idea.
Wedding planning ideas
Kay asks,
I am planning to get married in India next year and I am looking for wedding locations in Gujarat. I would like to have the 5 star look but at the same time have the ethnicity of an Indian wedding. Could you help me out on some ideas and maybe some contacts of the places?
Dear Kay,
A lot of our previous articles are on wedding decor, which deal with traditional, stylish and grand ideas. Please check on Themes in Wedding Decor. As far as wedding locations in Gujarat you could take help from the vendor directory on www.shaaditimes.com.
Fusion wedding
Rinku De asks,
My sister is getting married in Jan 20th 2006. We are having two kinds of wedding: Tamil as well as Bengali style and my budget is 3.5 lac. Can you suggest how to go about it since it is the first wedding in my house?
Dear Rinku,
Fusion decor will be most appropriate wherein a lot of banana leaves, fresh flower mandap, bells, rice paste and floral rangoli are used. The seating can be South Indian style where food is served on banana leaves. Conch shells can be blown along with traditional thalis during the garland exchange. This way your guests will be exposed to both the cultures.
Gifting ideas
James Espejo asks,
A friend of mine in Bangalore is getting married and I cannot go to India for his wedding. I am not sure of any Indian traditions and I'm confused what gift to send. Nowadays in the US, we can send money, but I wanted to check first. I looked around your website and was unable to really look in what international information is available. As you should be learning, there are more and more friendships occurring globally due to work environments, we really need the help on cultural gifts and ideas. Thanks in advance.
Dear James,
Cash gifts are norm in almost all communities in India. Gift registry is not so common here but slowly will gain prominence as more and more people find the need. Wedding websites like www.shaaditimes.com have a lot of information on gifting ideas, rituals and customs with regards to gifting.
