Green Wedding Attire

''After all there is something about a wedding-gown prettier than any other gown in the world.'' - Douglas William Jerrold (English dramatist and writer).
A wedding gown is truly exquisite only if its reams of silk haven't been made by cruelly slaughtering silk worms. Also, natural vegetable dyes should be used instead of chlorine and toxic dyes.
Ahimsa silk:
Fashion Designer Anita Dongre says, ''I want to create awareness about a silk which is known as 'Ahimsa silk'. Normally the silk making procedure involves killing thousands of silk worms for a single filament of silk.
In contrast, in ahimsa silk the silk worm completes the entire cycle (from birth to a butterfly). The silk is harvested from the cocoons without any harm to the insect. Although the procedure is long and tedious, it is small price to pay for saving millions of worms from getting killed.''
So, you don't necessarily have to wear a khadi wedding sari to promote ahimsa. You have a simple silk route to ahimsa now!
Other eco-friendly fabrics:
Steer clear from nylon gowns. Anita cautions, "Nylon is used to make wedding attire because of its rich shiny look. These fabrics are synthetic and harmful. Also nylon is highly flammable and a fire hazard. It is safer to avoid the use of such fabrics on auspicious and special occasions."
Whether wool is eco-friendly or not is debatable. Anita says, "Animal rights activist are taking a charge on the wool industries to improve their shearing methods. With rising awareness organizations are looking out for the interests of the sheep."
So without doubt the most eco-friendly fabrics to make wedding gowns and tuxedos are organic cotton, hemp, bamboo and silk that doesn't involve killing silk worms.
Reusing your mom's wedding dress:
Yet another eco-friendly option is reusing your mother's wedding attire. It'll give you a vintage look and bestow a fond family feel. Anita suggests, "A sari which has been made decades ago will have rich and intricate embroidery. In the earlier times, the artisans dispensed great attention to detail in their work.
If the sari is old and the fabric is tearing, then re-use the zari border on fresh fabrics to make a new wedding sari. If it is in good condition, then just make a new blouse with a modern cut, from a good seamstress, to suit it. You can also add a variety of trims, laces and embellishments to your attire to give it a fresh new look." You may also reuse your sibling's wedding attire.
Eco-friendly dry cleaning and safe storage:
If you preserve your wedding dress well then your child will be able to use it at her wedding. Anita advices, "Save the bag the wedding attire is delivered in. It serves as a protection cover for storing as well as transferring the garment to different venues without damage.
Also, after the wedding, take your outfit to good dry cleaners immediately and ask them to remove stains lest they become permanent. Most often wedding garments are embellished with heavy trims and embroidery. Some beads are not suitable for dry cleaning and may melt during cleaning; only a reputable dry cleaner will test before cleaning.
Speak to the wedding dressmaker before cleaning and confirm the care instructions for the dress. You should store your garment in a cool, dry place with minimum humidity and moisture. Check the wedding dress regularly for any discoloured areas or stains to allow the garment to remain fresh."
