7 tips for selecting & giving the perfect wedding gift
We all want to give gifts that are appreciated and put to use. Are you one of those people who have bought everything from expensive chocolates to extravagant wine and yet never received truly effusive thanks? Well then, unless you're really indifferent about the other person, chances are you're just like most of us - completely clueless when it comes to selecting the perfect gift.
Some people are natural born shoppers. They just know what to buy for whom and get a great bargain to boot. Here are some great tips that will help you select the perfect wedding gifts.
- Step into the other person's shoes
Giving gifts is about pleasing the recipient and not yourself. So, the next time you go shopping for a wedding gift think about what the bride or groom, or both will like. Bypass the beautiful tea set you always wanted and skip the monogrammed golf bag as well. Chances are that the couple probably has little or no use for items that you crave. Instead, focus on what they need and want and pick a gift of their choice.
- Knowing what the recipient wants
So what does the couple want? That's the million-dollar question you need to find the answer to. It's time for you to play a little Sherlock and keep your eyes and ears open. Most people getting married generally have a wish list as long as their arm - especially brides. They are almost always discussing the new item they are 'so keen to buy' and you can definitely get a few hints from just paying attention and listening to them talk. Another great way is to go shopping with the recipient. You don't need to buy anything on the spot. Simply observe what the person is shooting covetous glances at or exclaiming over and make notes. Later you can choose a gift that suits your budget.
- Cash works just fine
All sentiments aside, cash works just fine as a wedding gift! Ask most couples what they would prefer as a wedding gift and the answer is likely to be - cash. Newly weds have to incur a large amount of expenses in a short time. The wedding, the honeymoon and setting up a new house can all be pretty hard on the wallet. So if you are unsure about what to buy then take the easy way out and gift cash.
- From the bride's side
Typical Asian weddings involve a fair amount of gift exchange between both parties. The bride's family especially is expected to shower gifts on the groom and his family. So what makes appropriate gifts?
With people becoming more and more selective about their retail preferences, it is best to go the currency way. Simply give cash wherever possible. In cases where cash is not appropriate try sticking with jewellery, gold and silver. Electronics also make great gifts.
Whatever you choose to buy, keep in mind that it does set the tone for the relationship both families will share in future. Shabby gifts or gifts that do not have a high perceived value may not be received well. If you are on a limited budget stick with a lesser number of gifts of good quality.
