Enameller Extraordinaire: Kana Lomror
|
Are you in the rush of the wedding season and searching for the perfect gift? Or you're on a whirlwind trip to India and have a couple of days to chill; you might want to buy something unusual, one of a kind, made in India and yet an original work of art - perhaps by a renowned Enameller?
He takes a moment to describe the medium of enamelling to his audience. He is Kana Lomror, an award-winning Enameller and Artist. To him, work is worship and this is reflected in his craft. Lomror is one of the few true enamellers in the world having exhibited at many World Enamelling Conferences and museums worldwide.
Originally a specialist in fresco paintings and oils, Lomror's chance encounter with a visiting professor from London changed his focus and he was mesmerized with the structure of enamel.
Shaaditimes caught up with Enameller extraordinaire Lomror recently at the Bajaj Art Gallery in Mumbai.
The concept of the decorative utility arts spanning centuries continues to prevail in traditional Rajasthan meenakari , but is making a surprising resurgence among the hoi polloi and glam crowd. The concept of enamel and meenakari is as interesting as its history which dates back to the invasion of Persian culture and its artisans to the Indus Valley circa 700.
Moulded in many forms from artefacts and art, to decorative adornments as jewellery and other luxury accessories enamelling is an art-form unto its own.
''For me enamelling has been a journey likened to my journey in life,'' he begins. ''When I started I didn't know about art. To me it was geography. I was studying at University (Rajasthan) when I topped the class in drawing and there was no looking back after that,'' he reminisces. His inspiration he admits is his dreams. "I dream, breath and live my art," he pauses. "I suppose it is an extension of my being and my visual expression to the world which presents my observations and my dreams."
His interests are diverse, "I love any thing from cars, motorbikes to quiet landscape scenes inspired by poetry and all which we believe to be the utopian ideal. I try to create that in my larger pieces." He continues, "Traditionally enamelling was considered Middle-Eastern until it migrated to Europe and India. Its original forms were sword handles, glasses, and gods and goddesses in India. What makes it absorbing is its malleability and pliability where you take a sheet of metal and try and create 3-D sculptures, forms or the appearance of depth."
And it was this love for creation, which united Lormor with his wife Kavita. "We met online through a matrimonial service. I was on cloud nine after we finally met," recalls Kavita. "I knew I always wanted to marry an artist," jokes Kavita who is also an artist. She clarifies, ‘More than his expertise as an artist, I think I was drawn to him simply due to his clean heart. Kana completely has a heart of gold. I don't feel married. We are more like friends," she says.
Lormor adds, "When I started talking to her I knew this was the start of a lifetime relationship. I had a lot of friends with a variety of interests. She was the image of the wife I wanted in my life and had been dreaming about for a long-time," he muses.
Whether the enamelling technique is cloisonné, or chemp leve or plique where vitreous colours are meshed in layers and treated with oxide. Or whether it's a miniature work of the Koran, or a depiction of a Hindu God, a palazzo scenery on a plate or an enamel embossed marble bowl - Lormor's works promise to create an outburst of admiration by young and old alike, the art loyalist and the quintessential novice of beauty and luxury, and guarantee to be a talking point from which the spirit of Lormor radiates with emotion and heart.
You can catch up with the effervescent illuminator at the Club Chirag, Habitat Gallery, and Nehru Place in Delhi from October to February 2009. For more information email Lomror at kr77_l@yahoo.co.in or phone 0-9920334326 (Mumbai) or 0-9899201926 (Delhi).
