Ice breakers for the bahu and her inlaws
|
Welcome home
When the bride enters her new home there is a lot of good-natured ribbing. The groom's brothers and sisters take every opportunity to play with their bhabhi .
Santi is a game played between the devar (groom's younger brother) and the bhabhi. They are both given neem sticks and asked to hit each other while going round in circles. This is an indication that the bhabhi is like a mother to her devar and can reprimand him henceforth. The devar never strikes his bhabhi in return. In another game between devar and bhabhi, the devar sits in his bhabhi's lap and demands money from his brother to release his new wife.
The groom's sisters also play games. They ask their new bhabhi to pay homage to an ancestral mound. When the bhabhi dutifully bows, the cloth covering the mound is removed to reveal a heap of artfully arranged footwear! In some families, the footwear is all new and bought for the bride herself. The groom's sisters gift this pile of footwear to their bhabhi as an apology for jesting with her.
Thus, Indian wedding are not all about serious pujas and mantra-reciting pandits. They are family gatherings filled with lighter moments that make wonderful memories for years to come!
