How To Take The Best Travel Photos
|
Whether you're an avid photographer or one of those who brings out the camera only on birthdays or other special occasions, clicking pictures when we are travelling is something that all of us do.
How many times have you come back from a vacation, seen your pictures and thought to yourself, ''I don't have any decent pictures! I wish I had taken better ones!'' Well, here are some travel photography tips that will help you to take great shots while on vacation.
Get Great Pictures Every Time!
- Have a separate camera bag: If you do not have a custom camera bag, you can carry any small bag or purse for your camera. The idea is to have your camera and other accessories in a separate case which is small enough to carry on your person. Most travellers miss out on great shots simply because their camera is packed away inside their suitcases and they don't have it handy when a photo-op presents itself.
Also, make sure you have an extra camera battery with you (fully charged) so that you don't have to worry about being in the most beautiful place on earth and your battery dying on you! Carrying an extra memory card or stick (and extra film if you're still using those ancient cameras!) is also a good idea so that you don't have to delete precious photos due to lack of memory space.
- Practice: Most of us know how to use our cameras only in the most basic fashion, which is point and click. However, cameras nowadays have a lot of functions that are intended to help you get great pictures. For instance, the 'Landscape' function on a camera allows you to get better pictures of scenery. When you use this function instead of the normal 'auto' function on the camera, even far off mountains in your pictures will look as sharp as nearby trees or other landscape features.
Another function known as the 'Macro Mode' allows you to capture the finer details of an object. Thus, if you want to shoot pretty floral pictures or that small little seashell that your daughter found, this is the way to capture it perfectly.
Similarly, if you're taking a close up shot, simply zooming in on the person is not good enough. Switch your camera on the 'Portrait' mode and you'll be amazed at the picture quality! Thus, familiarize yourself with the various functions of your camera and then practice before you leave so that you know what all the different picture modes are. The resultant photo album that you will produce will shock even you!
- Consider taking a tripod along: Yes, a tripod stand can enable you to take great pictures when you're on vacation. And no, they don't have to be large or bulky. Today, you can get fold-away tripods that are very easy to carry and use. The main advantage of having a tripod is that you'll be able to click pictures even when there is no one else around for you to ask help from. My friends always wonder why I am never in any travel or vacation pictures. That is because I am the designated photographer and thus always end up behind the camera! A tripod would definitely come handy in such situations.
- Be trigger happy: Always take multiple pictures of the same shot. Try to take the same shot from a different angle and from different vantage points. This allows you to choose from a bigger range of compositions and capture more memories. With digital cameras, you can simply delete the ones where your eyes are closed, someone's hand is in the way, or which are out of focus and keep the best ones. Just make sure you have that extra memory card or at least some way to download your pictures so that you can free up memory space regularly.
- Do remember to put your camera down! Some people get so engrossed in taking pictures that clicking away is all they do on their holidays. However, in your excitement to get that perfect shot, don't forget to enjoy your vacation too. Put down your camera and enjoy the sights as well as the company of fellow vacationers. Simple advice yes, but something that many people forget to do!
Thus, with the help of these travel photography tips, you should end up with splendid memories of your travels. Remember, most holidays are once-in-a-lifetime events, so ensure that you take plenty of photos to reminisce over later. But like I said, don't let your photography override the vacation itself. If you do happen to miss out on a great picture - well, that is what postcards are for!
