Travel Insurance: Don't Leave Home Without It
|
Whether you travel frequently for work or pleasure, or you're taking that once in a lifetime vacation; do make sure you have adequate travel insurance. The consequences of not having travel insurance can be disastrous indeed. Let's take a look how.
After saving for nearly four years, Meghna and Vivek finally had enough money saved for their dream vacation to the US. Their itinerary included 6 cities, covering the East Coast as well as the West Coast. Their flight tickets were booked, hotel reservations were made and paid for, and their bags were packed and ready to fly!
Just a day prior to their departure however, Meghna's mother had a massive heart attack and was hospitalized. Needless to say, Meghna and Vivek could not leave for their trip as planned. Because the doctors could not provide a specific prognosis for Meghna's mother, their trip could not be postponed but had to be cancelled altogether.
Since the trip had been cancelled at the last minute, most of the money that the couple had paid towards their flight tickets and hotel bookings was not refunded to them. Four years of waiting for their dream holiday and their best laid plans went up in smoke in a jiffy.
If only Meghna and Vivek had the foresight to buy some travel insurance, they would not have to bid adieu to their once-in-a-lifetime vacation.
Types of Travel Insurance
Travellers can avail of different inclusions in their travel insurance
policy such as:
- Trip Cancellation Insurance
- Emergency Medical Insurance
- Lost Baggage Cover
- Medical Evacuation Coverage
Buying travel insurance thus ensures that you do not suffer financially if various situations occur and your trip has to be cancelled. You are also covered medically and can claim expenses for emergency medical services availed while on your trip.
Need for Travel Insurance
"I have travelled extensively throughout India and abroad and have never had any problems. Why would I then want to waste money on travel insurance?" asks Rajiv.
Like him, many people think that they not need to buy travel insurance and that it is a wasted expense. After all, how often have you really been in a situation where you wished you had bought travel insurance?
Fair enough. You may not have actually been in any circumstances where you required travel insurance, but then again:
- Are you prepared to wait to find yourself in such a situation and then repent about not buying travel insurance?
- Can you afford to fall ill on one of your international vacations and shell out thousands of dollars on emergency medical care?
- If an airline happens to lose your luggage (unfortunately it happens way too often), do you want to pacify yourself thinking something like, "That's ok, my bag only had clothes in it and nothing really valuable", or will you want to be compensated for your loss? After all, even just a bag full of clothes can cost you thousands of rupees!
Thus, travel insurance is not really about whether or not you're actually going to need it, but being prepared for any eventuality that you do. And considering that the insurance premium will be a very small fraction of the cost of your trip, it is definitely worth it!
