8 Tourist Traps To Avoid

8 Tourist Traps To Avoid Many popular tourist attractions around the world are fast turning into tourist traps. By tourist traps we mean places, establishments, or travel spots that have a high number of tourists, because of which they are being targeted by touts and peddlers, thus robbing tourists of much of their pleasure in visiting these places.

The most immediate example that comes to mind perhaps is of the Siddhivinayak Temple in Mumbai. It is indeed unfortunate that such a holy place of worship is also becoming a tourist trap of the worst kind. Right from the hundreds of flower vendors, to the various shops that sell you offerings for the Lord, to even the temple authorities who are now charging Rs. 50 per person to be in a 'special' queue for darshan; everything translates into a trap for tourists and devotees.

Flowers and puja thalis are sometimes sold at 10 times the actual cost of the items. Make sure you come to an agreement on the cost of the thali before you take it, lest you end up paying Rs. 300-500 for a Rs. 50 thali. Beware of the touts who will take you inside for 'VIP darshan' for Rs. 100-150 per person (there is no such thing). Even the official line of Rs. 50 darshan is so long that you might as well save that money and get in the regular queue.

Perhaps the only way to really visit this Vinayak is to take a leaf out of the Bachchans' book and get there even before dawn breaks.
