10 Great Tips Every Traveller Can Use
|
Regardless of how well prepared you are, things still tend to go wrong when you're on a holiday. Whether it is your perfume bottle breaking in your bag, your passport getting lost, or perhaps your suitcase being heavier than the weight limit, there are many things that can spoil a good vacation.
But here are some real tips sent in by our readers that will help you to overcome such problems while travelling and make your vacation memorable.
- Be sensible about scents: Instead of carrying your perfume bottle with you when you travel, you should simply spray your clothes lightly before you pack them as well as any accessories that you may be taking along. Not only will you smell nice and fresh, but you won't have to worry about your bottle breaking and messing up the entire contents of your suitcase.
- Handling your handbag: The straps from travel bags have a nasty way of digging into your shoulder, don't they? Not just that, but if you're carrying your video camera bag, or even your child's diaper bag, it can become very bothersome if the straps start to cut into you. To avoid this, you should simply buy a padded seat belt cover and put it over the straps. You may not have heard of padded seat belt covers but they are quite easily available in an auto parts' shop.
- Oh God! What should I do now: Ever had this thought when you were in a public restroom and there was no tissue paper, let alone water, to help you out? If you have, then it is vital that you carry a small roll of tissue paper with you whenever you travel. While you're at it, you should also keep a small bottle of soap with you. The mini bottles of shampoo that they generally have in hotel rooms are great in this regard. So before you step out of your hotel room, pocket one.
- Keeping your clothes wrinkle free: I hated my clothes getting all wrinkled in the suitcase whenever I travelled. A friend of mine suggested that I line my bag with bubble wrap and even put it in between my clothes. I tried it and my clothes were practically wrinkle free. Not just that, but the bubble wrap was not heavy and hardly took up any space at all. And if I bought any breakable stuff (which was often), I had something very handy to wrap it in!
- Talking the local language: When you are travelling to another country, it can get very difficult to explain to the locals if you need something. Here's how I get myself out of this mess. I have taken pictures on my cell phone of stuff like water bottles, taxi, a restroom, restaurant, and even of an aircraft. So, if I'm looking for these things or perhaps asking the way to the airport and I cannot explain it, I simply show the picture to the locals and they immediately know what I'm talking about!
- Get a local calling card: When I went abroad with my family, we were a big group and had to hire two cars. Because of tricky road signs, little bylanes, and confusing directions, we often got confused and both the cars ended up at different places. We promptly bought some local calling cards and put them in our cell phones after which we thankfully did not have to get separated.
- Throw in the towel: If you're going on a beach holiday or if you're going to be using the hotel pool while on vacation, remember to pack your beach towels. Yes, your hotel will probably supply you with their towels, but when you have your own and you lay these on the beach chairs, it becomes very easy to spot which is yours even from a distance. As far as the hotel towels go, you should use them to dry off.
- ID your IDs too: If you are travelling with your family, especially with kids along, you may have to look after 4-5 passports, even more. Opening these passports each time to have to use them so that you can hand out the right one to the right person can be such a pain. This is why I have put those peel-off stickers on the top of every passport with each person's name on it. Now I no longer need to waste time looking inside each one.
- Lose the excess weight: No I'm not talking about becoming thinner, but instead dropping some extra kilos from your luggage. How can you do that? Well, most of us tend to carry large suitcases that weigh a ton even when they are empty. So instead, I once decided to pack my stuff in a huge duffel bag which had wheels on it. I actually shaved off 4 kilos off my baggage weight because the duffel weighed that much less than my regular travel suitcase!
- Enjoy: Even with these handy tips, you may still face some problems while travelling. But whatever they are, make up your mind to enjoy and don't let anything ruin your trip. And if you do have some tips to share with others, please send them in!
