Renting A Car Abroad
|
Important information to consider before you rent a car abroad.
Renting a car can be the most flexible way of travelling; giving you freedom that planned tours don't offer and accessibility that public transportation might not cover. In some parts of the world it is your only means to get around. However, renting a car abroad is a more complicated matter and requires certain amount of background knowledge before you venture into unknown territory.
- DOCUMENTATION: An International Drivers Permit/Licence is required by most countries abroad in order to let you rent out a car. This document is issued by the RTO and other Auto Associations that have been authorised to do so. This permit is valid for one year only and it is your responsibility to get it renewed. Now, the twist in the tale is some countries do not recognise even this permit and expect you to get a local translation of your driver's licence either through their consulate prior to departure or upon arrival locally.
Car rental companies normally ask to see your IDL along with your own valid driver's licence. Some of them might even ask to verify another piece of identification like your passport. Your credit card number will be put on record so that to protect them from any damages that may be incurred and are not covered by insurance. This is also true for all prepaid car rental services.
- ROAD SIDE: Remember that not every country drives on the left side of the road like India. If you are used to one side and suddenly have to switch to the other for this trip, it will take a huge amount of conscious awareness and discipline. UK, Ireland, Singapore, Japan, Malaysia, South Africa, Jamaica, Australia and New Zealand are some of the major countries where you drive on the left side. On the other hand, America, Canada, most of Europe, Middle East and South America drive on the right side of the road. Our neighbours; Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bhutan all drive on the same side us as, the left side.
- DRIVING LAWS: The legal age for driving can also vary depending in which part of the world you are visiting. However, remember that some car rental companies levy a surcharge if you are below 25 years or over 70 years of age; while others may not even rent out to that age group at all.
Speed limits must be adhered to everywhere. They are normally posted in kilometres except in the US, where you will find them in miles. You cannot jump the red light as may be the norm in some Indian cities!
International driving laws can slightly vary in every country. For example, in Canada most parts of the US, you are allowed to turn right on a red light. Nowadays most countries impose large fines if you talk on a mobile phone while driving. Some states in USA, Canada and Europe have banned smoking while driving with a minor present in your car. Common sense demands you don't drink and drive; but the laws worldwide demand it too!
- SEAT BELTS: Some countries go as far as stating that, "only those many people as there are seat belts." Seat belts are obligatory in more than three quarters of the world now. Infants and toddlers have to use the appropriate restraint systems which are available for a fee at all auto rental companies. Make sure you inform them in advance, so that they are readily available at your pickup location.
- CAR TYPES: While most of the Americans use automatic cars, large parts of Europe have stick shifts. They might not mention the type of transmission, and it is up to you to ask for what you are comfortable with. Air conditioning and cruise control are not available in many compact and mid size cars. Check with your rental agency.
