Where Should You Go For Your Honeymoon?

Where Should You Go For Your Honeymoon Congratulations! You're engaged to the man / woman of your dreams and are giddy with excitement. The wedding preparations are going smoothly and you're really looking forward to being married and starting your new life. But the one thing that has got you a little frustrated is your honeymoon.

You want to plan the trip of your lifetime but just can't figure out where to go. Fret not, you're like most engaged couples when it comes to picking the perfect honeymoon destination. It's not as easy as you thought it would be! So, here are some tips that will help you to make the right choice for your honeymoon destination.

Do bridal magazines really help?

Most engaged couples tend to begin their honeymoon destination search by leafing through bridal and other travel magazines. Pictures that look alluring and destinations that come across as extremely romantic usually catch their eye and that's what they go in for. Yes, you too can do the same but you should be aware that what you're picking need not necessarily be the best destination for your needs, but may just be the one that is publicized in the best way.

So, before you make your final choice, here are some questions that you should ask yourself. These questions will help you to determine what your best choices are and choose one accordingly.

  • When are you planning to go? Barring a few, most vacation spots have their high and low seasons for travel. Weather conditions, local attractions, and tourist activity are the usual criteria that determine the best time to travel to any place. For instance, if you were travelling to the Caribbean Islands, you'd want to know when their hurricane season starts and avoid travelling during those months. However, suppose you wanted to go to Goa, then you'd be able to honeymoon there at any time of the year as Goa has something special to offer you throughout the year.

  • How long are you planning to go for? You don't want to spend the better part of your honeymoon just getting to your destination, do you? Thus, it's important to know which destinations are doable and which are not in the time that you have set aside for your honeymoon. For instance, if you can only take a week or 10 days off, you're definitely not going to be looking at destinations across the US or even Africa. It would take you a day and a half to get there and an equal amount of time getting back (from India). That's 3 days gone from your 10 day trip! So, either look at something closer or extend your honeymoon time.

Also, your focus should not be on covering the maximum number of cities if you're travelling to a different country. Try and do only that many which you can comfortably cover in the amount of time you have. It is your honeymoon after all. You can always come back for a touristy type of visit if the place has so captured your imagination!

  • What is your honeymoon budget? This is the big question for most of us. It's your honeymoon that we're talking about so you want to do things on a luxurious scale. So, instead of picking moderate hotels and scrimping on air travel just so you can cram 3-4 more days into your honeymoon itinerary, you'd rather take off for a shorter honeymoon but do everything in style!

Remember, hotel rates and travel fares are only a part of your honeymoon costs. You need to keep in mind that eating out, sight-seeing, activities such as water sports and special excursions also cost a great deal of money; not to mention shopping! So, add all that up and then determine what your budget allows and what it doesn't. One way to reduce your honeymoon expenses is to keep your schedule a little flexible and go during the off season rather than bear peak season surcharges.

  • What is your partner's idea of the perfect honeymoon? When choosing the right destination for your honeymoon, make sure you keep your partner's preferences in mind too and not just think of your likes and dislikes. Yes, I may have made your task that much more difficult because the two of you may have diverse ideas, but unless you want to take your honeymoons separately, you'll choose the destination only after consulting with your to-be spouse. This is one area where surprises are hardly ever welcome!
