How To Make Travel Greener
|
Billions of people travel every year, locally and abroad, thus making the travel and tourism industry the biggest industry in the world. Most of us want to travel to beautiful locations across the globe during our holidays.
Any destination that can boast of lush greenery, tranquil and clean waters, and pollution-free environs attracts visitors by the millions. However, the choices that every individual traveler makes, contribute towards the negative impact that travel is making on the environment.
Unnecessary wastage of a country's resources, over-used trails, not making optimal use of water and electricity and other such aspects of travel are leaving their mark on the environment. Soon, we may not have any beautiful and serene place to travel to thanks to irresponsible travel.
This is why it is important to be environmentally aware and do everything we can to make travel greener. The hotel industry has taken the first step in the way of boutique hotels and eco-tourism. Here's what we as individual travelers can also do to make our holidays a lot greener and preserve our environment.
- Flying is very harmful to the environment because of the emission of greenhouse gases. So, if you're not traveling very far, try and travel by road or rail instead of flying.
- Research green destinations and green hotels online and choose these options for your holidays.
- Try and consume locally produced food and drinks. Also, indulge in local sightseeing and other activities so as to support the locals wherever you're traveling to.
- Don't develop the mindset that just because you have paid a great deal of money for your hotel room you should make the most of it. You can make the most of it but not by wasting natural resources. So, use water conservatively. Switch off all lights and the air-conditioner when not in use. Do not keep lowering or turning up the thermostat constantly but try and keep it at a constant temperature that you prefer.
- Use your hotel bed sheets and towels for 2-3 days instead of getting them changed everyday. This helps to reduce the consumption of water, electricity, and harmful detergents.
- Enjoy as much of your destination on foot as you can instead of driving around. Not only will you help the environment by reducing fuel consumption, but will also keep yourself fit and healthy!
- When traveling, make use of public transport instead of renting your own vehicle.
- Use a digital camera to take pictures of your holiday. Since you can delete the pictures that you don't need, you won't end up printing a whole bunch of photos that are no good. And the ones that you do get printed use up a lot less chemicals to print than pictures from cameras with film.
- Indulge in low impact activities instead of those that impact the environment hard. For instance, rent a bicycle to see the sights instead of a motorbike. Use a kayak or hand-rowed canoe to explore a beautiful lake instead of a motorboat. Visit the local park and zoo etc.
- Fill out comment and suggestion cards at hotels and other businesses that you utilize. Let them know that you're interested in eco-tourism and encourage them to make their services and facilities as environment friendly as they can. You may think that your voice won't matter much, but if all of us take the time to do this, our collective voices will eventually matter!
Thus, by making your travel greener through the above, you can help preserve the natural beauty of our world for future generations to enjoy!
