5 Tips To Make Flying With Children Easier
|
Children are an extreme joy to have around; but let's be honest - they can really try your patience too. Parents are known to practically tear their hair out when travelling with their kids, especially if they are flying with them.
A lot of things can go wrong during your flight, which can leave you frustrated or sometimes even in a dangerous situation. Thus, to ensure that your flight is absolutely safe and comfortable for you and your child, here are some travel safety tips.
- Make use of child restraint devices: If you're travelling with a child who is under 2 years old, you may have to keep them sitting on your lap throughout the flight. In such situations, it is advisable to carry a suitable child restraint lap device along with you. Make sure the device is as per your child's weight. If money is not an issue, do buy a separate ticket for infants and use a restraint system to secure them safely to their seats.
- Keep all essential items in your hand luggage: Make a list of everything that your child may need or want during the flight and make sure to pack all those things in your hand luggage and not in suitcases that you will check in. If your child has some special needs, ensure that you do not forget their special equipment or medication.
Make sure you take extras of everything including baby food, diapers, medication and formula so that you are prepared in case your flight is delayed or should your check in luggage happen to get misplaced. Also pack an extra change of clothes for both you and your child. And lastly, do take something that will keep your child engaged such as a favourite toy, colouring books and crayons, a puzzle book.
- Ask for a window seat: Most parents ask for aisle seats for their children so as to give them some space to move about. However, it is best to request a window seat and seat your children away from the aisle. There have been many instances when children's hands or feet were hurt by the passing food cart or other passengers. Also, looking out the window will give your child something wonderful to enjoy and keep him occupied!
- In an emergency, always help yourself first: Parents have the tendency of reaching out to help their child first in any kind of emergency situation, which is a very natural instinct. However, you should be helping yourself first and then your child. For instance, if the oxygen masks drop down, put one over your nose first and then help your child. If in trying to ensure your child's safety first, you pass out, there won't be anybody to help your child.
- Keep an eye on your children at all times: Supervise your child throughout the flight. Do not fall asleep or nod off if your child is awake. Keep their seat belt (or seat restraint system) tied at all times, even if the seat belt sign is switched off. This will protect them from sudden turbulence, which is all too common while flying.
By following these travel suggestions, you can ensure a safe journey for your child, and a less harrowing one for yourself!
