Tips To Overcome Fear Of Flying
|
Airline statistics show that more than 30 lakhs people fly everyday. While not everybody is fearful of flying, there is a vast majority of people who do have a fear about flying and thus get anxious every time they need to fly. In fact, the fear can be so debilitating for some people that they will not board an aircraft come what may. This causes them to lose out on a lot of personal enjoyment and can also hinder their climb up the corporate ladder. If you too are scared of flying, here are some tips that can help you to overcome this fear.
For the anxious flier:
You can get on an airplane but usually suffer from anxiety or moments of panic when you're airborne. What to do?
- Sugar and caffeine can worsen your anxiety. Thus, you should try and avoid eating or drinking anything that contains sugar and caffeine before and during your trip.
- Have plenty of plain water before and during your flight as this helps your body to adjust better to the atmospheric conditions inside the aircraft, which in turn will help to lessen your anxiety.
- Flying may seem very scary but it is actually one of the safest modes of transport. Statistics show that you are more likely to die in a road accident than you are while flying. Keep this knowledge in mind the next time you begin to feel scared in an airplane and it should help to lessen your worry.
- Turbulence can feel extremely ‘bad' and may give you the sensation that the plane is falling. But turbulence is also very normal during flying. If you find yourself getting tensed when there is some turbulence, try and relax your body and keep telling yourself that it is ok and will pass soon. Try to think of it as bumps along the road when you drive and it won't seem as bad.
- Don't be embarrassed about your fear of flying and let the cabin crew know that you're an anxious flier. They will check on you periodically, which will help you to feel a lot better. If flying alone, it is a good idea to let your co-passenger also know that you're scared of flying so they too can offer support if needed.
- Try and get a seat at the front of the airplane, as you will feel less turbulence in the front than at the back.
- Keep yourself engaged when on board by reading a book, listening to some calming music, or interacting with your fellow passengers. Simply closing your eyes and concentrating on your breathing also does wonders to lessen your anxiety. If nothing else, even fiddling with the little knobs for the lights, AC, and the aircraft music can help to take your mind away from your fears!
For the extremely scared-out-of-their-wits flier:
Even the mention of flying makes you sick and you cannot even get yourself to board an airplane. What to do?
- Hypnotherapy (using hypnosis to heal) can be a big help to rid you of your flying fears. Through hypnotherapy, you will learn to relax your mind and body and also gain control over your fears. It changes your behaviour patterns and will help to make the transition between being scared of flying and enjoying the freedom to fly without any fears.
- If you absolutely must fly and there is no other option, you can ask your doctor to prescribe a mild sedative for you. This helps you to keep calm and gain a little control over your fears. A stronger sedative (on doctor's advice) can also be used that will help you to sleep on long flights so that you don't get anxious on board.
