The Changing Face of Indianness

On the other hand says Suresh Mehta who recently celebrated his 82nd birthday, "I have seen the horrors of our nation's freedom fight. I have seen how these angrez took over our country, our culture. It is a pity that the youth today is blindly following the west. Tiranga during our times carried a different connotation all together. We looked up to it always. Today you have tattoos of our national flag available. I personally consider this as an insult when a young girl in a short skirt and a skimpy t-shirt has our flag tattooed on her cheek during a cricket or tennis match."

A common and popular theme that many parents and grandparents like to talk about is how their children are simply not 'Indian'. They prefer to drink Coca Cola, eat at McDonalds and wear Reebok.

However, the truth is everywhere you look you see India Shining. Whether it is the group of young kids chasing the Indian cricket team across the globe waving their tricolour or a band of Gujrati migrants converting Edison, NJ into a mini-India. Whether it is the latest International designers using Khadi in their couture collections or Indians being voted the best businesspersons in several countries in the West.

What one needs to understand that it is only the forms of expression that have changed - not the feelings. Whereas the youth today refuse to show their Indianness through the herd mentality, at heart they are Indian - and proud of it.

Indianness today means a step towards making India a better place to live in. It is a fight for freedom - from poverty, from corruption and from ignorance. Whether you fight sporting a Nike t-shirt or a kurta from Khadi Gram Udyog is for you to choose!

So, what does Indianness mean to you?
