Revisiting Mythology
Krishna - THE Eternal Playboy
|
"The only present - day gentleman who seems to fit the rank is Dharmendra," says Dhruv Wahi, a 19-year-old undergraduate student. True, not once have we heard a complaining word against Dharam paji from his wives, Prakash Kaur and Hema Malini. But then, we aren't talking about just two wives here. Krishna had, let's see... over 16,000 wives!
Krishna's Wives... & Lovers
His chief queen was Rukmini. Krishna married her on her request to save her family from a bloody battle. Then there were Satyabhama, Jambavati, Kalindi, Mitravinda, Satya, Bhadra and Kakshamana, who represent the basic natures of man (prakruti).
Besides them, Krishna married 16,000 princesses, after freeing them from the clutches of demon king Narakasur. Freeing them alone wasn't enough. He also had to restore their honour, and what better way to do that than through marriage, given the age and time (Krishna is believed to be born either in 3327 or 3228 BC). Be it in love or war, there was always a context for Krishna's actions.
But what about Radha, one may ask. Krishna never married her. Does that make their love a lost story? Does it make Krishna a man who let down the woman he loved? Well, like every relationship between two people, this one too is not black and white.
While Radha appears as one of the most confusing characters in Indian mythology - sometimes as Krishna's amorous lover and at other times his divine consort, the beloved of Krishna but the wife of another - the fact is that Radha-Krishna remain one, whatever the shades of their love.
And then long after Krishna left the world, physically, came another woman for whom he remained the epitome of love. Meera. And till date there are thousands of women world over who find themselves searching for their 'Krishna'.
Finding Krishna
Unfortunately, finding 'Krishna' amongst mortal men may not just be difficult but also most definitely impossible. After all, how many men today would be willing to take on 16,000 wives? If they can manage just the one wife with grace they're fit for sainthood.
And that brings us back to the question we began with. Why, when we can accept a playful Krishna as divine, can we not accept flirting as a part of human nature?
The answer is as complex as the question.
The fact is that the Indian psyche is so all-consolingly enamoured of its Gods that we cannot look beyond and see the faults that lay within each one of them. We prefer instead to glorify them and put them beyond human reach.
Whatever the case may be, the fact is that no other man or God can ever be as loved or loving as Krishna. And what better way to celebrate this unique Love than on Krishna's birthday-Janmashtami!
P.S. We'll revisit Indian mythology with some celeb-mythological pairs next week... so keep an eye out!
