Revisiting Mythology
Krishna - THE Eternal Playboy

Revisiting Mythology Mythology is so firmly rooted in the Indian psyche that not only do we choose to name our children after popular mythological characters, but indeed we derive many of our attitudes and customs from it. In fact, we even tend to categorize members of our families into mythological characters.

Yet, can we accept boys evolving into Krishna -The God Of Love?

We've all probably had the conniving aunt who was the 'Kaikai' of the family, and the highly generous person who was as daanveer (giving) as 'Karan'. A 'Brahmachari Bhisma' and an over ambitious 'Duryodhana' are also common in the typical Indian family.

But by far the most common of all the popular mythological characters has to be the God of Love - Krishna. Even as early as 6 months, you'll find members of the family talking about their young lads being as precocious as the beloved Krishna. The moment the little boy makes a few girl friends he's been labelled well and good as the family's adorable flirt.

And yet, as adulthood approaches, a teenage boy or a young adult male is no longer looked upon favourably if he is prefers to hang around in female company. Why the distinction? Why the change from being proud about the toddler flirt to getting keyed up about an adult one? After all, we all know, adore and worship Krishna - and he was definitely THE eternal playboy.

Radha-Krishna
Who doesn't know of the Radha-Krishna amour - the love legend of all times? Great poets like Govinda Das, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Jayadeva (author of Geet Govinda), painters, writers, sculptors, all have fed their creativity on this perfect model of man-woman love.

One argument can be that the Shiva-Parvati love was as exalted as that of Radha-Krishna. Maybe so, but then Shiva and Parvati have always been viewed as Gods residing out of human reach, accessible only in times of crisis through meditation. Their love is the love of Gods.

Krishna too is God, but in flesh and blood, and Radha, your average girl. Their love is more on the ground, closer to the love mortal men and women feel for one another - playful, passionate and painful (reams have been written on the pangs of separation Radha suffers when Krishna goes off to perform his duties for the larger good).

Knowing and Loving the Flirtatious Krishna
But while Radha remained Krishna's chief love, she wasn't the only one. There were the other gopis too, perhaps less celebrated, always in the background, but nevertheless with unconcealed love for Krishna shining through their eyes.

Innumerable stories, paintings and sculptures over centuries illustrate Krishna's boyhood days in Vrindavan spent in the midst of these gopis. He'd drive them up the wall with his pranks, like taking off with their clothes while they'd be bathing in the village pond, and would yet managed to sweep them off their feet. Whether with his boyish charm, his looks - Krishna's beauty is described as unparalleled-or with the magic of his flute.

Just how many men - or Gods - can claim to command such love from more than one woman during the same period? And with such élan to boot?
