Navratri - then and now. Enjoy!

Director Jayadev Hattangady says that he is "areligious. All the festivities in any religion are also a community and social affair. While appeasing oneself, you are also bonding with the people in the family in a jubilant manner." Jayadev can strongly feel the change too. "Now-a-days it has become a commercial activity and sometimes hinges on froth exhibitionism. It is an occasion for resurrecting and rejuvenating yourself but sometimes these religious festivities are misused."
In the family it is a "low key affair and done with elan. I don't mind my children to go and enjoy in their own style but I personally don't have any fervour. I believe in the spirit of the festivity," Jayadev says.
Moushami Chatterjee (Bengali)
"Our Navratri celebration starts with navrat mahalaya- the last day of shraddh. We start at 4 am with the chandi paath. The chandi paath explains why and how Durga ma was created and her battle to defeat Mahishasur- the demon.", the actress explains.
"My children also follow the traditions reluctantly (laughs). I make sure they get up at 4 am and participate with the family on the first day. I try to pass some traditional values to them. Our sanskar are the great Indian heritage. It is sad to see that we are losing our cultural past these days. I hope our youngsters understand that it is the biggest treasure we have and this makes us richer than the west."
Besides imbibing the sanskars in her children, Moushami doesn't lose the opportunity of family bonding and fun. "It is a great festival of togetherness and a lot of joy, which you discover with your family. The garba dance is a great exercise and a great display of traditional wear as well. I go for dandiya sometimes when my Gujarati friends invite me. It is also painful to see that entertainment has taken over worship. People are just living for fun. It is important for us to do some soul searching. Joys as well as sorrows are just a part of life, they are not life itself."
