We assure you - this will be one Card party people will remember for a long time!
DIY Tips For Handmade Diwali Cards
Things you need:
- Thick card paper OR handmade paper in festive colours such as red, orange, yellow, gold and green. Black card paper also makes for a great base card.
- Card scissors (the ones with the serrated edges and not the plain edges).
- Glue sticks.
- Glitter in various colours. Also keep different glitter pens handy.
- Lakshmi and Ganesha stickers and accessories.
- Other card accessories such as ghungroos, kundan stones, beads, lace and chamkis.
- Swatches of different fabrics such as silk, brocade, bandhani, zari and gota. (Make sure you choose some vibrant colours, but not something with too much design).
- Different coloured construction paper.
- Paints.
- Ribbon.
- Fine markers and calligraphy pens to write on the cards with.
Making the card:
- Cut out a rectangle 9" L x 6" W from a card paper or handmade paper of your choice. Fold this rectangular piece of paper so that you have a base card that is 4.5" W x 6" H.
- Using the serrated scissors, cut off ½ cm along the 3 open sides of the base card, so that you have jagged designed edges on the 3 sides.
- Now you need to decorate the face of the card. Here are some tips to do that:
- Cut a 'Diya' shape from any coloured construction paper or fabric of your choice. Also cut out a flame shape from yellow paper. Stick these cut outs on the front of your card, which will then have a pretty Diwali Diya on it. Stick little glue around the Diya and sprinkle some glitter powder on it.
- Alternatively, you could also cut out other Diwali shapes such as Lakshmi or Ganesha, and perhaps even some crackers to stick on the face of the card.
- Using real 'ladis' (firecrackers) on the cards also looks great and adds an authentic touch to your Diwali card.
- Apart from using paper cut outs, you can also use fabric swatches on your handmade Diwali card. To use a fabric, you first need to draw the chosen design (for example Diya) on the card and cut this design out. You will now have a Diya shaped hole in your card. Now, open the card and stick a pretty piece of fabric on the inside cover of the card. Voila! From the front, you will have a stunning fabric Diya decorating your card.
- A simple and easy way to decorate your card is by using ribbons. Simply cut strips of red and green coloured ribbon and stick in a slanting fashion all over the face of the card. Write the words 'Happy Diwali' on the middle two ribbons, while the remaining ribbon strips can be decorated by adding the various symbols of 'Om', 'Swastika', and 'Shubh Labh'.
- Another option for decorating your Diwali card is to paint on it. The use of different coloured paints along with some lace can make your Diwali card very special indeed.
- Once you have finished the main decoration on the face of the card, it is time to embellish it further. Here's how you can do that:
- To further adorn your card, you can make use of lots of glitter. Simply add some glue to the areas where you want to embellish and sprinkle glitter all over the area.
- Ghungroos also make wonderful adornments. String together 4-5 small Ghungroos. Punch a small hole on the bottom right side of your card and tie the ghungroo string through the hole. Every time you open the card, a wonderful tinkling sound will greet you.
- Other accessories such as kundan stones and beads can also be used to enhance the beauty of your Diwali card.
- After the decoration is complete, it's time to write the card. Use calligraphy pens to write your message inside the card. Even if you do not know how to write in the calligraphy style, just using the pens will make your writing more attractive.
Your masterpiece is now ready to be sent out to your friends and family as Diwali Greetings!
If you're handy with the computer, you can also make use of different design software to create stunning designs for your handmade Diwali cards. Children especially love to make their own cards and the time spent doing so will be treasured by one and all!
