Secrets To Hosting The Best Diwali Card Party
|
Diwali is practically upon us and it's that time of the year again when people are busy planning their card parties. Whether you've hosted a card party before or not, be prepared for some hard work before the actual playing begins. Shaaditimes tells you what you need to do to ensure that your card party rocks!
Secrets To A Terrific Card Party
- A colourful guest list: Instead of inviting the same people that you do every year or for every other party of yours, try and put together an interesting and eclectic guest list. Don't worry if most of the people don't know each other; playing cards can be a great ice-breaker. And the more diverse and unrelated your group, the more fun people will have playing cards as they won't have to feel guilty about winning over their own family or close friends!
- Create the right atmosphere: Unlike other parties you have to make special arrangements for a card party. Here are the must-haves for a Diwali night card bash:
- Arrange for plenty of 'gaddas' so that everyone has a comfortable place to sit, and larger groups can play comfortably. If you think this is being too casual, you could arrange for round tables and chairs, and create a casino like ambience.
- Have plenty of money counters and chips on hand so that your guests don't have to waste time substituting other things for counters, nor do they have to keep track of their winnings and losses with a pen and paper.
- Also arrange for lots of currency notes in all kinds of denominations such as 1000, 500, 100, 50, 20, and 10 rupee notes for those guests who'd rather play with hard cash than with counters. If any of your guests turn up with only big denomination notes (as most people have the tendency to), you can readily offer them the required change to get them started.
- Keep markers ready so that you can mark the playing tables or groups as high stakes, medium stakes, or low stakes. This ensures that your guests don't join a group that is out of their income range and can save themselves from the obvious embarrassment.
- Have something for everyone to do: At every card party, we invariably see quite a few people who aren't interested in playing cards and are simply relegated to being on-lookers all night. Arrange for some other games such as Housie or Taboo for such guests. You could even provide them with a choice of some interesting board games, so that a good time is had by one and all!
- Be excessive with food and drink: A card party is not the time to have food and booze in limited quantities. People are known to get so engrossed in playing cards that they may just witness the next morning's sunrise in your home! So, ensure that there is plenty of good food and drinks (soft as well as hard) for your guests. You don't need to arrange a seven course meal or a fully stocked bar. Even a few tasty starters and one main course (like Biryani or Chole-Puri), and just wine and beer for drinks will also do, as long as they keep coming!
- Keep your driver on call: Be a responsible host and dissuade guests from drinking if they are driving. Also, keep your driver on call so that you can offer a ride home to guests who want to leave, but have hitched a ride with someone else who is on a winning (or losing) streak and does not want to leave yet.
And lastly, remember to invite your guests well in advance of the party night so that they don't make alternate plans and all your party planning does not go a-waste!
