Get the cutting edge
Grooming the groom

The verdict's out. On your D-day wear your hair short, simple, and neat. The mark of a gentleman.

Javed Habib If the bride is the princess of the evening the groom is the prince. And one ensures that one looks like one too, by neat cuts, which look classy. Shorter hair cuts are in but not close cropped. Says famous hair stylist Javed Habib, "Shorter hair makes a man look younger as well as glamorous and trendy. And since it's the day where they have to put their best foot forward they all want neater, cleaner looks with no spikes or unruliness in the mane." Besides, it is far more manageable, in control and low maintenance. Says stylist and trainer Vineet Desai, Nalini and Yasmin Hair Institute, "On the D-day low maintenance is of great importance. Shorter neatly set hair not only attracts eyeballs but also is hassle-free."

Cory Walia A good cut and good wash is usually all it takes to get your hair back to shape or to give you that ultra metro edge. Says Nalini, "These days men prefer to go with the simple look. They usually just want their hair smoothened out and look neat. Nothing fancy." Ace-stylist Cory Walia gives a few tips on hair maintenance after a cut, "It is necessary to comb and condition the hair well after the hair cut, something men take for granted. Hair is blunt after it is cut and it needs attention and care at that point for it to settle well." Another thing to keep in mind is to have a cut two weeks in advance. Says Vineet, "Hair takes time to settle down after the cut. It is only after two weeks or so that it fluffs out and starts falling well." Hmmm, guys remember that!

Hair cuts and face shapes
Now for a few insights into how to get them going for your face type. Vineet informs us on how he judges the right look based on the face-cut of his client, "Ideally, we try to give the head an oval shape, which means if the face is round we leave a little more body on the top and if it's heart shaped or triangular with a pointed chin then we leave it longer on the lower sides for balance. Those with rugged jaw lines we give them some more body on the front and a little on the sides. For men with broader foreheads we leave strands for the wispy look falling on front which can be set with gel or left untouched."

Side-burns are hot!
One elementary thing Javed cautions against is ignoring the side-burns. Says he, "I always take care that the side burns are short. It not only adds to the neatness of appearance but also it is practical. Generally, men wear pagdis and such for their weddings and with long sideburns it becomes a messy affair." Every strand in place sure means something, doesn't it?

Styling the hair for the D-day is not that difficult as it seems. It all depends on the kind of hair one has to add that advantage styling products can give. Though some might like their hair to fall naturally, Vineet suggests that some styling gel needs to be applied for the hair to stay in place. He adds, "Remember we are talking of a function that needs you to look good for an extended period of time. A mild gel like WetGel or Fixmax from Wella works wonders; it keeps long hair in check and makes short hair stand well."

Serum or gel?
Alternatively one can use mousse if one just needs to set it, keep it in place and not style it. Although when it comes to styling, experts prefer serums to gel. Says Javed, "Hair gels tend to give a hard look. Serums work 150% better than hair gels." Cory agrees, "A silky potion or good hair serum can work wonders for one's hair. Especially rough or frizzy hair." But Vineet doesn't quite concur. "They are not really comparable. Serum gives a shiny look and gel gives the wet look. It totally depends on what kind of look one wants. It's just that people don't like to use gel on a regular basis. For them serum is better." Vineet also recommends hair wax if one wants to avoid the wet / shiny look. It not only keeps hair in place but leaves it looking natural." He recommends, "Schwarzkopf and Wella especially the wax, Brilliant Affairs."
