The Showdown At Screen Awards

Sheathed in controversy, the 15th Annual Star Screen Awards was like a typical Bollywood masala movie - lots of colour, gorgeous women dancing away, unexplained glitches and goof ups, a showdown and of course - the martyr!
Without taking away anything from the winners, the real highlight of the evening's entertainment was the showdown between Ashutosh Gowariker and host Sajid Khan. Sajid is known for his wise cracks and potshots at anyone and everyone in the industry. As is typical of him, he went after Gowariker by saying that Ashutosh had asked all the technicians to stay at home so he could accept awards on their behalf as well.
Ashutosh took offense and came back saying that Sajid Khan had no right to demean or make fun of anyone and nor was the show made for him. He also did not appreciate that most of the telecast time would be devoted to Sajid Khan and the winners were being asked to cut short their speeches. It only got worse when Amar Singh came and saluted Ashutosh Gowarikar for having the courage to stand up and speak his mind. Sajid Khan on the other hand defended himself by saying that the audience is the biggest factor and in order to increase the TRPs, they have to have a good time by making fun of people. Later sister and co-host Farah Khan came on the stage to say that they considered the entire industry family and hence made fun of them. However, they had no intention of hurting anyone's sentiments but would not be offering an apology!
If that wasn't enough drama for the evening, Akshay Kumar when offered Best Actor (Popular) for Singh Is Kinng refused the awards saying that Aamir Khan deserved it for Ghajini. This is the same Akshay who has often been seen on talk shows and otherwise complaining about how he never gets an award. This is also the same Akshay who is known to have gotten other heroes roles chopped and is renowned for hogging all the publicity media of his movies.
Of course, now he goes down in history as the actor who refused an award and nobody is likely to forget this anytime soon... do you remember who won the award last year? And the year before last? On the other hand, do you remember which female singer disqualified herself from the Filmfare Awards to give others a chance to win? Eureka! Now you get it!
