Understanding the Hindustani in America
|
Everyone says making life abroad creates a lot of unsettlement and confusion. But my question is - Has life really been any different for a woman? I am not an American born Indian it's just been a year that I have been married to an American citizen. How different does life seem -- I must say not much.
Life for an Indian woman, whichever country she is in, has changed little to nothing. Though I am this strong headed woman, I have always been conscious of a fact that I would have to work a little harder towards making things simple for myself. I would like to believe that an Indian woman are now far more self-righteous than before, she has started to live life in her own terms. But then it's really baby steps towards a new beginning. I was never really asked if it was ok for me to drop my career back home at it's pinnacle, leave my parents to join my spouse, it was understood that being a woman I would do it.
Little to big changes and adjustments in a woman's life goes unnoticed. I also sometimes wonder why the onus of forming close bond with the guys family solely lies on the woman, should not the man make as much efforts with the woman's family as she does with his. I keep reading of all the tips posted on the various websites on how a woman can better her relationship with her mother-in-law, her husband, her children, so on and so forth.
But why does a woman's life still center around keeping her man's family happy? Has ever a man given as much of a thought about his wife's family. Does it take more effort to bring up a man than a woman? For a woman has life really changed for good? Does it help moving from your own country to another to seek empowerment which comes only from true freedom?
There is so much confrontation of her modern, contemporary values with the narrow-minded, conservative values of our Indian society. We as women are always conditioned to associate happiness with little to big sacrifices and compromises. Education and financial independence has allowed us to exercise few choices but the right to be respected equally like a man seems a distant dream. She is yet to be liberated in the true sense. She still needs a man who gives her a right to be respected as a human being. Be it America or India the sub-continental woman still needs to see the balance improve in her favor.
