'Each generation is a new people,' observed Alexis de Tocqueville.
This being the case ShaadiTimes takes a ring-side view at three generations- kal, aaj aur kal . How different is Gen X from their parents and grandparents? On what issues do they differ most and on what least?
Every generation is a melting pot of different kinds of people. Attitudes, mindsets and ideologies reflect each generation's interpretation of life.
In triple speak no one generation is either right or wrong. It is a point of view.
If a relationship is not working will you let go?
|
Tithi Sarkar, journalist
If it's a relationship that matters, of course, I would not let it go off easily. I will try to talk out with my partner. But I would not force anyone to stick to me. There should be no pretense in a relationship. If something is not working, it's not working. I shall try to make it work but that's not the end of the world for me...I have a life of my own and nothing is more important than that at the end of the day.
Shamim Tankiwala, housewife
No I do not want to let go my relationship as it is very important to me. I think this is where the new generation goes wrong. They are impatient and behave selfishly sometimes. They let go off relationships quite easily because of their ego clashes instead of trying to understand each other and resolving the problem. One cannot break off a relationship alone as it a partnership and needs a joint consent. And if the partners love each other truly they can handle such adverse situations by sacrificing a little to make the relationship last.
Sachin Khedekar, actor
No I won't do that. The need of the hour is to try to make the relationship work. If everyone starts thinking that they are all independent individuals then the meaning of the term 'relationship' will die.
It's best to sit down and talk out with your partner. But before that think about rebuilding the relationship, not disintegrating it. Try to make a positive effort in holding on to the relationship or else it won't work. However, even after putting in your 100% effort if you feel that it is bringing in only pain and discomfort in your life, then you have no other choice than to let go. But that should be the last resort.
Expert speak:
Dr. Laura Vaz, psychoanalyst, shares her perspective.
Today the younger generation is not as bound to marriages and relationships as their older counterparts. Earlier people felt that they were married for life, but now the values and attitude have changed a lot. Men always had an easy time in marriage whereas women were expected to work harder to make it work. But today due to the financial independence and women liberation they too challenge men if they find some faults. Also divorce cases are very common now and they are no longer considered to be a social stigma. Hence the responsibility to make a relationship work is now shared equally by both the partners. It's not that now people do not work on relationships. They too try to make it work by going to counsellors but only the level of patience and tolerance has decreased. They have become conscious about their rights and independence as today they know they have several options in life.
