Coping With A Partner's Special Ability
|
Making it work...
To make your relationship with a differently abled partner a happy and successful one, Chrisann has this advice, "Information is the key. Learning about the impairment, its nature and effects together, can help both partners to bond and feel better prepared. Consulting with physiotherapists and psychotherapists can also help.
Support groups are invaluable whether on-line or off-line. The couple may look at alternative ways to reconnect since they might not be able to do the things they used to previously do together as a couple. Empathy not pity is a must on the part of both the partners."
What's the right thing to do?
So is Sunny a better person than Rahul?
Why?
Isn't it better to be like Rahul and simply end a relationship, rather than be married to a disabled partner and play the martyr? Would it be better if Rahul pretended he was ok with it, and then 'suffered' or 'compromised' because he was in 'love'?
Sunny's outlook is of a person truly in love. He's accepting of Aarti's disability and willing to put in whatever effort it takes to make her better. But at the same time, he is not looking for kudos or praise.
In simple words, the right thing to do is what comes naturally. If you can be with a differently abled partner without treating them differently than you would a fully abled partner – then so be it.
If not, then perhaps you are lacking in ability as well and should look elsewhere?
