Coping With A Partner's Special Ability
|
Nivedita and Rahul were college sweethearts who were thought to be soul-mates. Rahul regularly gifted Nivedita chocolates, roses, teddy bears and Hallmark cards and proclaimed his self-less and immortal love for his girlfriend.
One fine day Nivedita made a confession to her boyfriend about a slight deviancy in her backbone from birth. Therefore she walked with a slight hunch and had applied to her college under the 'physically challenged' quota. Nivedita was completely unprepared for the fact that her boyfriend would immediately reject her and end their relationship for such a slight physical challenge, which wasn't even discernible to him till she decided to tell him.
Contrast Rahul's heartless behaviour to that of Sunny Pawar. Like Rahul, Sunny also had a sweetheart while in college - Aarti - a bright and lively girl of eighteen years.
After a year of being lovers Aarti met with a serious car accident, which put her into coma. Aarti's family was not very financially well off. Sunny contacted the media to publish Aarti's story so that the readers could contribute funds for her expensive treatment. Donations poured in making it possible for Aarti's family to hospitalise her for fifteen months at Mumbai's premier Jaslok Hospital. With Sunny's help, Aarti came out of her coma and was released from the hospital.
As Aarti's mother was a single working lady, Sunny realized how important it was to help her to take care of her daughter. Nowadays Sunny visits Aarti's home for six days a week during the hours her mother is at office. Aarti is still bedridden and unable to talk, sit or walk. She can just vaguely acknowledge her mother and boyfriend's presence as her care-givers but can't seem to identify them as her 'mother' and 'boyfriend' respectively.
Despite all this Sunny nurses her devotedly. He has put up posters on her room on how much he loves her and finds her beautiful. Though every day is a challenge, an optimistic Sunny looks forward to the day when Aarti will recover fully and even complete her studies.
Sunny has currently put his studies and career on the hold to take care of Aarti. When people tell him that he is not being practical by sacrificing everything for Aarti he answers, "Love is not just about going for movies and picnics with your sweetheart. The litmus test of love is if you help your lover during the most difficult times too. This adversity has only made me stronger. My faith in God has only grown stronger as I see Aarti gradually recover."
The change disability brings...
Psychologist Chrisann Almeida says, "The effects of injury and disease affect different people in different ways. Depending on the nature and extent of the impairment a relationship can change slightly or extensively. Both partners need to discuss the extent to which the new development will hinder their relationship and work with professionals, doctors and therapists to come up with solutions to help them cope effectively."
