Lessons From The KS - Part 4
Embracing

Lessons From The KS - Part 4 Embracing Take me in your arms

In its simplest forms, it hardly takes time, yet conveys a shoal of meaning. So never underestimate an embrace for its power to signal love. If that has set you thinking of getting close and cuddly, read on for a few tips from the Kama Sutra.

You meet an old friend or relative, and hug! Among other things, hugs suggest camaraderie, love and affection. What about intimacy? Well - that's a strict no-no. When intimacy and desire enter the picture, we're no longer talking of hugs. It's now called an embrace, and may be used as a subtle (or gross) sign of your growing love and passion.

According to the Kama Sutra, there are different kinds of embraces to suit every type of couple - those who have not yet been physically intimate, those who have, and those who are in the throes of passion, or making love.

For instance, if you'd like to confess your desire without words, to take your well-established relationship to the next level, Vatsyayana speaks of a 'touching' embrace. You know how we talk of touchy-feely moments of intimacy? In this respect, this one surely takes the cake, so to speak! It involves a head to toe, or limb to limb embrace - a face-to-face light touching of two bodies.

Perhaps you're a woman in love, willing to be openly bold about your sexual needs by making the first move. The 'stabbing' embrace performed by suggestively touching your man with your upper torso (read breasts) so that he feels you, should do the trick. Consider yourself a winner if he grasps you and responds likewise!

Now as we know, Vatsyayana thought of everyone and everything (!), so he also suggested a 'grinding' embrace for couples that have been going out (in every sense of the word) together. What does this involve? As the word suggests, allow your bodies to move slowly or grind against each other, and perhaps simulate love-making. Doing the Salsa together might achieve the same in today's times!

Invariably, a couple can be far more imaginative, and adventurous when actually making love, than when simply suggesting or simulating the act. Of course, as he has throughout the text, Vatsyayana explains, "Sexual embraces intensifying passion may be used for love-making but only with care."

Fact is - not every embrace is for everyone. Clearly, some of his proposed positions appeal only to 'liberated' women and men. Like the 'twining vine' embrace which has a woman twining around her man and bending his face so that she can kiss him, or a tight entangled embrace involving arms and legs (thighs) that is far from gentle.

Gentle is as gentle does. When it comes to passion play, no two people are alike. If your current partner is gentle by nature, don't even think of suggesting 'wild' moves. Of course, do consider that in the long run, couples must share the same comfort zones, and temperament. This makes for a lasting, loving twosome.

P.S. Next week, we take a look at how an ideal wife is expected to behave, according to Vatsyayana.
