The Colours of Love - Pink
|
In her famous novel of the same name, Han Suyin described how love is a many-splendoured thing. Truly - love has so many facets - each of which appeals to a certain personality type. Besides, often as we evolve (or age), we are attracted to experience newness in love.
Starting today, we present a new series that looks at various shades of love that a few men and women have experienced, and not necessarily in the prime of their youth. After all, love has something for everyone.
Love, revisited
If we were to believe William Shakespeare, ''It is better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all.'' This is not to say that the memories of love will pull you through the rest of your life. No - no one can live happily without some form of love in the present moment.
It's just that love can inspire people to want to revisit that experience. Like Radha and Suresh. They're in their early sixties, retired although Suresh dabbles in shares and Radha volunteers at a local NGO. Their son is settled in USA, and their daughter got married and left home just last year. Thankfully, they're financially sound.
Don't ignore any emptiness within
Six months after their daughter Latika got married the couple had yet to get accustomed to the quietude of their empty nest. They sought to get more involved in their pastimes, but even this did not completely fill the vacuum. In truth, however much you love your work or hobby, these are never substitutes for a person.
Fortunately, for Radha and Suresh, revisiting their love for each other was just round the corner. Friends proposed a visit to Binsar. The two couples booked their tickets and were genuinely looking forward to the break. "Something to get excited about," thought Radha, as she packed walking shoes and comfortable track-pants that she hadn't worn in years.
Then unluckily, their friends had to cancel their visit at the last minute. However, seeing his wife's genuine enthusiasm, Suresh decided to play along with her feelings and go ahead with the trip.
Get into the groove
The magic unfolded in the hills. Away from home, Radha felt free. She forgot she was an elderly mother, and soon to be grandmother. She realized that she was Suresh's wife first and foremost, and needed no excuse to revel in their togetherness. Realizing that his wife was not only a homely mother but his first love, Suresh too, was totally smitten with his wife's newfound love for rediscovering their relationship.
In their case, 'pink' love prevailed! Not as the fluff of candy floss, but as a soft warm space they were both so comfortable and happy in. It's just that in the whirl of caring for their family, they had forgotten about their freedom to go beyond mundane concerns and truly express their love for each other.
Back home - pink continued to triumph. Feeling rejuvenated, Suresh insisted Radha pull out all her 'mod' clothes. He took her shopping for matching 'his' and 'hers' tees and pants. They sought to do so many more things together, and actually signed up for Salsa classes! So okay - they weren't the most flexible couple on the floor, but just the love that shone in their eyes got every younger couple wistfully wishing they'd be as lucky in love!
'Pink' love
But Radha and Suresh knew that they'd not only been lucky in love... they were lucky in their ability to be able to add 'pink' (read vibrancy) to their love - even after many years of living the responsible life.
Do you know of another Radha and Suresh who got bogged down thinking they were past the prime of their love? How did they come over the stalemate in their love life? If they're still struggling, perhaps you could share this story with them.
So many of us forget how important 'pink' love is... it's all about keeping the flame alive. It doesn't cost a ton, but the rewards are priceless. Here's what you could do to add pink to your love today:
- Buy your husband / lover a flower - men hardly ever expect flowers, but you know what, they love receiving them!
- Pick up the phone and say 'I just called to say I love u' or SMS the message, right now!
- Sign up for a hobby class together - if Salsa is too hot, try waltzing! Or even cookery sessions might be fun!
Go Pink!
