Lessons From The KS Part 6
A Bond That Lasts A Lifetime
|
Marriage is a relationship you get into believing that it will last a lifetime, and you know what - the Kama Sutra suggests that there is a lot you can do to achieve this.
According to the Kama Sutra, 'deep, intimate trust' should be the foundation of a marriage. Interestingly, the text emphasizes a spirit of camaraderie, and partnership in every sense of the word, between married partners.
Both husband and wife should perform their respective duties, but never omit sharing the details of their independent lives with each other. For instance, husbands should confide their financial worth to their wives and allow them to play the role of money managers. On their part, wives should make these decisions wisely and keep their husbands informed of where the money goes.
Sharing goals
Independent duties are essential to grow as individuals. Nevertheless, from start to end, a marriage is all about evolving together. There is a lot to be said for sharing goals and aspirations.
Vatsyayana has a lot to say in this regard - "When a man fasts or takes a vow, a wife should also take on the challenge for her own purpose, and not be thwarted in this matter."
Again, if a husband has set his mind on a certain achievement, a wife also focuses her energy on accomplishing the undertakings he has begun. In our modern age, the reverse would apply equally well. Shared hobbies are a great way for partners to bond.
For better or worse
A marriage, as they say, is for keeps - for better or for worse. In this context, Vatsyayana speaks of occasions when you don't see eye-to-eye, say on financial matters. Suppose you believe your husband has splurged in excess on buying his new golf set.
The Kama Sutra suggests you don't berate him when he walks in with his friends; proudly holding the new set as though a trophy! Instead, wait until you're together in private - then have your say.
For your eyes only
Alongside being an expression of love, sex is also a means for a couple to bond and make each other feel special. Much as your sexual energy is reserved for your partner, Vatsyayana believes a wife should reserve certain attire - whether clothes or jewellery or make-up - for her husband. Let him see a part of you (pun intended) that the world has no clue of - it doesn't have to be physical; it could also be your mind. But unveil your thoughts, desires and moves slowly - let the bond thicken over a lifetime spent together.
