Infatuation Can Lead To Disaster
Shades Of Love - Part II

Infatuation Can Lead To Disaster Infatuation in post-marital scenarios is best nipped in the bud.

Infatuation (Uns)

Continuing our inquiry into whether love can ever spell doom in a marriage, we focus on infatuation (The first part focused on Attraction and how it can negatively impact a relationship). A shade of love no doubt, it is usually associated with teeny-bopper or puppy love.

Think back to your youth, when you may have had a crush on so-and-so. What did you experience? A high when you saw the guy (or girl), ecstasy if he (or she) deigned to speak a few words to you, and perhaps even jealousy if he (or she) went out with someone else?

What happens when infatuation strikes adults?
But somehow, the high, the ecstasy and the jealousy were short-lived. Six months on, you drifted away from the 'so-called' love and were equally hung up on someone else!

That's infatuation for you.

However, although infatuation during ones teen years is laughable, and may be passed over as a growing up phase, it is neither funny nor cute when a couple is married. That is to say, if a married person feels infatuated for someone other his/her partner.

In that case, as Karan experienced, it is downright humiliating.

Infatuation and frivolity often go hand-in-hand
Karan married Avantika after a whirlwind courtship. Two years down the line, they were a much-married, happy-go-lucky couple keen to enjoy their freedom as they put it, with no strings (read children) attached.

Every year, they'd take off on a sojourn to an exotic locale. Last year it was destination Turkey. So far, so good. They traveled with a few other Indian couples. The group included no kids as the itinerary included a lot of night life. Perhaps because of this reason, the couples were in the mood to let their hair down.

Is that why Avantika behaved so giddy from the word 'go', wondered Karan?

Of course Karan and Avantika made friends with their co-travelers, especially with Suresh and Shilpa, who were also from Mumbai. Karan thought it would be nice to hang out with them, as they could pursue the new friendship back home too. That Avantika would behave so weird was something he simply didn't imagine.

You see - Suresh was a writer of bestseller novels written on women and for women, some of which were Avantika's favorite books. It didn't take long for Avantika to behave as though she were totally besotted with Suresh. After their first dinner together, it was 'Suresh this' and 'Suresh that'.

Don't let infatuation get the better of you
Karan played the amused husband for the first few days. But on the fifth day of their week-long holiday, Avantika's behavior got more than a trite embarrassing. She would just go on and on talking to Suresh about his character in this novel and that. She even insisted on dancing with him, calling him to waltz with his 'number one fan'!
