Can 'Love' Ever Spell Doom In A Marriage?
|
Attention implies attraction, which is suggestive of more...
Initially, Neeta believed him, hence also believed that he had never trespassed his 'partner' status. But in time, she noticed he would often go out of his way to attract attention. How?
As Akshay was extremely well off, there were always some singles vying for his attention. But seeing him initiate action with a particularly nubile twenty-something model, through body language that suggested he was attracted to her (some unwanted attention, huh!), caused Neeta to blow her top one evening after returning home from the fashion event.
There was no point in lightly broaching the subject, as she knew that he was well past that stage. She tried to reason with him, and told him [quite truthfully] that by 'running after women' he was making himself the laughing stock of their social circle.
Akshay defended himself, nastily saying he only chatted up women, he hadn't slept with them. So it was not as though he had done any 'major' wrong.
Marital doomsday
But this didn't go down well with Neeta, who had borne with Akshay for so long, in spite of hating coming across as a 'rich man's wife who sticks with him only because of the good life.'
She no longer believed in his innocence. Further, in ten years, they'd had no children to divert her attention. She was financially independent as she worked as a consultant. She reasoned - 'I entered this marriage to have Akshay for myself. Now, his constantly being attracted to other women feels like sharing his love.' Driven to despair, Neeta opted out.
So you see - attraction is a shade of love. Husbands and wives enjoy and expect being the centre of attraction of their partners. If this is not the case, especially for an extended period of time, attraction can spell doom for a marriage, as it did for Neeta and Akshay.
