Arranged Marriage Equals Success?

This is however not to say that all arranged marriages are long but unhappy ones. The husband and wife may fall in love after marriage in an arranged marriage set-up and genuinely love and honour one another till death do part. Arranged marriages are changing, the prospective bride and groom are often allowed to date after their parents make them meet. So it's not always true that those in for arranged marriages nowadays are marrying complete strangers, they may already be in love before they agree to tie the knot. And not all arranged marriage couples will refuse to take a divorce if the marriage completely goes downhill.

Coming back to why love marriages often tend to break up more easily than arranged marriages, it's often said that those in love marriages have less patience and lack the will to adjust to make the marriage work out. A spouse always messing up the house or not wooing with flowers and chocolates anymore, are rarely reasons for divorce in arranged marriages. If these factors lead to splitsville it indicates that the person has unrealistic expectations from a marriage and low tolerance levels.

Liza Misra explains why this happens, "If reasons like these are stated for divorce then the relationship is usually infatuation. So if the passion or romance depreciates over time, a person may think that the marriage isn't working out anymore and may want to move on in search of new love. But marriage isn't just about passion. It's also about making a family." This is however not to say that all people who are in love marriages would opt for a broken family for trifling reasons and don't have the will to work hard to make the marriage work out.

So whether you are in an arranged or love marriage, do try hard to make it work out by all means. But if it's a miserable marriage involving abuse or betrayal, don't stop from taking a divorce for the sake of family prestige or the fear of social stigma.
