The Little White Lie
An Essential Part Of A Marriage?

Apparently, you need to understand whether like Rohit, you can afford a little white lie, now and then, to cover up an unintentional small gaffe. Yes - the keyword is small blunder, perhaps like splurging on an extra dress. Certainly not in case of a major relationship-threatening situation like a one-night stand.

If you need a rule of thumb - ask yourself why you're resorting to the white lie. If in using it, you're setting aside, even momentarily, a value that is the foundation of your marriage, you're definitely on the wrong track. Remember - white lies are never a substitute for honesty in a relationship. You have far too much at stake.

So when is a little white lie justified?

Another useful pointer is how you feel after telling a white lie - you should feel the pinch, for something not done that should have been done, or for something you forgot that you should have remembered.

As long as your conscience is still alive to having told a lie - albeit white - you will stay clear of lapsing into using white lies as a convenient way out of sticky situations.

So consider it permissible to tell a little white lie, only when you're not saving yourself from dealing with difficult circumstances, but are simply saving your loved partner from unnecessary grief.

It's also okay when you're using the white lie as a means to avoid hanging out the truth, as they say. The best example for this is the proverbial favourite ladies question, "Do I look fat in this dress?"

Truly - you don't need to dot all your i's and cross all your t's when answering this one. Let the little white lie keep the peace!
