When the going gets tough Is death the answer?
There is a way out of this mess. The idea should be to avoid landing into this muddle in the first place.(See box) But, if it happens, "a change in attitude can bring about all the difference in the world. It has to be a multi-pronged approach," says Dr. Laura Vaz. "There should be anti-violence norms for both men and women. Documentaries on the ill-effects of violence can help in the long-run. Politicians and other celebrities can also contribute to this cause by creating awareness." A lot can be done to save the society from going down hill.
In order to curb the problem right from the beginning, there are a few pointers that we may keep in mind while bringing up our children. We are willing to spend lacs of rupees on providing our children with the best education possible. But, we forget to teach them life's most important lesson - to adjust.
- Teach the child to deal with others.
- Train him to solve problems and look for solutions on his own.
- No problem is too big to be handled; teach the child to relax and think rationally.
- Let him perceive things in the right proportion.
- Learn inner calmness, because that is the most important way to remain away from violence.

How can one cope with this situation? Dr. Laura Vaz makes a point, "We need to realize that violence is bad. Violence is unnecessary. Violence is only causing harm to the other person and to yourself too. Once this fact is endorsed, it'll be a lot easier for us to de-stress ourselves without having to vent your spleen on our partner." Further, she adds, "Society is constantly evolving. Who knows what the world will be like a thousand years from today. It may be totally rid of violence and people may look back and wonder why were we so aggressive back then."
When all the odds are against you and you have no way out, what can you do? Is committing suicide the only way out? "For a clinically depressed person, suicide seems to be the only way to get rid of all worries. A clinically depressed person feels totally worthless and has zero self-esteem. There is no timidity in him. For him, committing suicide is an act of impulse. It is neither an act of bravery nor an act of cowardice," observes Dr. Laura Vaz
