When a couple spend a long time together, they start looking like each other. Their mannerisims change.
The same happened to Cuthbert Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Leo Haynes - the best opening pair in the history of cricket, till that fateful day in September 2001, when Tendulkar and Ganguly overtook them. Statistically, that is. Greenidge debuted in a World Cup match against Pakistan in 1975 while Desmond Haynes joined him three years later.
This legendary pair came together for the first time in a Test in 1978. West Indies was playing Australia at Queen`s Park Oval, Trinidad. In their first time together, they came up with a partnership of 87 runs. Incidently, this was three runs less than the first innings score of Australia.
Over the next 12 years the two Barbadians carved a niche for themselves. They battled against bowlers like Dennis Lillee, Richard Hadlee, Jeff Thompson, Imran Khan and our own Kapil Dev to notch up 15 century partnerships.
This should be viewed in the light of the fact that in those days, the first-15-overs field restrictions were unknown and the openers were expected to take the shine off the ball.
They opened the innings for West Indies in 102 one-day internationals and featured in partnership worth 5150 runs at an average of 52.55 per innings.
As can be expected in each big partnership, initially, Greenidge and Haynes were not the best of friends. Greenidge lived in England and Haynes was based in Barbados. They met each other during the matches (also at practice sessions, which were few and far between) and didnot speak much.
"As time went on, we started spending time together. I learned a lot from him and we became friends. We still keep in touch. Now, its more than ever," Haynes was heard saying in one of his recent interviews.
Haynes always considered Greenidge his cricketing master. "I always looked up to him and tried to see how I could emulate him and learn from him," he proudly says.
Here is what the senior partner has to say about his friend and fellow opener, "Ours was a relationship, a special chemistry." We believe you Greenidge!
