Inking impressions
Is the art of writing love letters dying?
|
Shibani Kayshap, Singer / Composer
Singer / Composer Shibani Kayshap known for her popular hits "Sajna Aa Bhi Jaa" and "Zinda Hoon Main" believes, "Love letters are as important as songs. If you look at my song Sajna Aa Bhi Jaa it really is a lyrical expression of my feelings and yearnings for love. I think most of us put love on a pedestal in making it unconditional and sometimes you have to step back and actually write your feeling down." She adds, " I don't think e-mails are as effective in sending love letters to each other. Ultimately an e-mail gets erased and you also forget your feelings in the same way. A love letter actually written on paper is a constant reminder of feelings you might have once had and may have forgotten. In a way they remind you how to feel again."
To Robert Browning:
And now listen to me in turn. You have touched me more profoundly than I thought even you could have touched me - my heart was full when you came here today. Henceforward I am yours for everything....
- Elizabeth Barrett Browning

No I disagree I don't believe in the art of letter writing. It is only, in my opinion, for people that are unable to express themselves openly and honestly in a relationship and find solace in saying it through their writings. I feel its much better to pick up the phone and just express your feelings. That is the best way. Over the years I have received love letters so I don't want to downplay their poignancy or their feelings. Rajeshji (yesteryear superstar Rajesh Khanna) wrote me many many letters and I still go through them at times when I open my drawer. I read them, but would never consider throwing them away. The reason I wouldn't throw them away is that they are a part of my past a part I cherish and value. Rajesh and I are good friends today and that is important to me. Although I feel it's more important to communicate through speech I have written a couple of love letters in the past and I see nothing wrong with that.
My dear Nora,
"It has just struck me. I came in at half past eleven. Since then I have been sitting in an easy chair like a fool. I could do nothing. I hear nothing but your voice. I am like a fool hearing you call me 'Dear.' I offended two men today by leaving them coolly. I wanted to hear your voice, not theirs.
When I am with you I leave aside my contemptuous, suspicious nature. I wish I felt your head on my shoulder. I think I will go to bed."
Irish-born writer James Joyce (1882 - 1941) written to the women who would become his wife Nora in 1904.
