Can infatuation turn to love?
|
 Though infatuation is generally short-lived, there are cases in which an infatuation has lasted a lifetime and has remained platonic. 19-year-old college student Aradhana Sarma believes, "One may even have a crush on a person one has never met. An infatuation maybe completely platonic and can be lifelong, unless something causes bitterness between the two."
Types of Infatuations
Differentiating between teen-aged and adult infatuation, 21-year-old law student Ira Chatterjee prudently explains, "I think in adult infatuations you're more realistic about the future of your relationship and also freer about experimentation. Adults may also be surer on whether they are ready to take the relationship for what it is and not how it should be according to the idea of an "ideal romance". That is at least the theory, unless Hindi movies and cheap romances have made us incapable of thinking out of the mould of their saccharine happy endings."
But can mere infatuation grow into love? Quips Parashar, "Of course it can, though there's no  water-tight division between the two. How can one exactly say when infatuation grows into love? After all the "line of control" between infatuation and love is not as clearly non-negotiable as the Indo-Pakistan border!" Somali Sengupta, a software programmer says, "I think every love story begins with an infatuation. When temperaments match, gradually you find yourself doing many things for this person, with the hope of making him happy. And presto, by that time, your infatuation has turned into love! I feel that Pehla Nasha is one of the most poignant songs about infatuation." However, contemplating marriage with someone just on the basis of infatuation is risky. Khanna advises, "The decision to marry should involve exploring various aspects, after people get together thanks to mutual attraction. Compatibility, common interests, financial status and socio-cultural background are all factors worth knowing before saying 'Yes, I do!"
