When u've got M-I-L
Tips for a happy saas-bahu jodi
|
- Why compete? - A lot of in-law troubles stem because of the tug-of-war for gaining importance or taking decisions in the family. The bone of contention might vary from your husband to the the sofa covers. This sometimes results in "this is mine and not yours". If you try and show that you're the boss right from the day after the wedding, your mother-in-law will surely resent it. Resist the temptation to treat your mom-in-law like a rival. Give it some months and endear yourself to the family before deciding to change the colours of the curtains or redoing the drawing room.
- Dream girl - Sometimes your husband's parents have a different image in mind for their son's wife and you don't fit in at all. It is also possible that your in-laws find you ambitious and less 'homely' than they dreamt you to be. Politely explain to them how important your career is and assure them that you would not neglect the home because of this. Share the details of your work with them so that they understand your long hours at work.
Ice-breakers
- Laughter is a great binder
- Go shopping with your in-laws
- Share good old gossip about eccentric relatives
- Look through old photo albums together
- Don't gossip with your neighbours

- Find out what she likes to eat. Take pains to download some of her fave recipes and whip them up when she comes. You will soon have her eating out of your palm.
