Celebrity liaisons in limelight
|
Everybody desires fame and glory... to become a celebrity that the whole world looks up to. But celebrity status does not come free; it has a price tag attached to it. Hounding paparazzi and loss of privacy is not the least.
The glamour brigade - film stars, models, and showbiz people - is finding itself increasingly and uncomfortably under the public gaze as people hunger for more and more Page Three blitz. As far as the celebrities are concerned, a little bit of adulation and publicity is desirable, but it hurts when their work is overshadowed by unsavoury write-ups about their liaisons - real and imagined. While we can freely saunter around on the sea front holding hands with our dates or munching bhel puri, the celebrities with their starry burdens just can't think of doing so for the danger of being mobbed or exposed.
"Who's-going-around-with-whom" curiosity
The media hawks or the paparazzi have always been particularly inquisitive about the private affairs and liaisons of celebrities, much to their chagrin. The media takes perverse pleasure in linking and breaking up celebrities... in indulging in the "celeb dating" game no-holds-barred. Princess Diana lost her life allegedly shying away from the media and now Prince William's relationship is under scrutiny. If the stars are to be believed, in India too this who's-going-around-with-whom snoopiness seems to be rising to never-before levels. In the acerbic words of Mahima Chowdhary, who has had her fair share of hounding: "I sometimes feel that media is just not in favour of our relationships lasting. They always want to see relationships break apart and then they celebrate the break up."
Feeding on juicy liaisons
So whether it is the Aishwarya Rai - Vivek Oberoi affair or the Shahid - Kareena capers, the flashbulbs and the writing pens are fully drawn out. On the flipside, many celebrities who are still struggling to make a mark or sell their latest screen venture manipulate the media tool for their publicity. Many producers indulge in the now-common practice of publicising the real life romance of their reel couple to generate some excitement and heat about their forthcoming film. One then wonders, whether, for a celebrity, dating is a pleasure or pressure.
Actress Mahima Chowdhary, whose relationship with tennis star Leander Paes made headlines, has experienced the pressure that media instigates. She says, "It is a pressure alright because they always question our commitment. They always want to know how far it is going; they want to pass judgments on it. It is almost as if they wish that the relationship falls apart so that they can write about it. It's not just here... it is the same all over the world. Though, in the West, they have started encouraging marriages and they always encourage families. They put a pregnant actress on their magazine covers. They write highly about people like Mel Gibson as he is a family man. It is always regarded well, if you came to the Oscars with your wife or girl friend or with family. Casanovas are not really celebrated in America. It is also a reflection of the stand the society takes."
Achievements take backseat to affairs
Model Upen Patel, known for his video, Sun Sahiba Sun, shares Mahima's grouse. He holds that the media makes much of his relationship with actress Amrita Arora rather than focusing on his capabilities and achievements. "I feel people don't know me for what I have done or what I am capable of achieving... the media would rather talk about my relationship.
This obsession has gone to ridiculous heights where people know me as Amrita's boy friend! I am at the beginning of my career and this is not something I am looking forward to. I still remember this incidence on a radio channel when the radio jockey asked one of the callers 'Who is Amrita Arora?' to which the caller replied, 'She is model Upen Patel's girl friend!' Amrita is a brilliant actress, but people seem to forget our talent; our relationship is news." Upen says that he never spoke with media about his relationship and maintains that he and Amrita are just "close friends". There are many instances where celebrities are recognised more for their affairs than their achievements.
