Families That Eat Together, Stay Together
|
The Maners have truly learnt to adjust for one another at dinner. Never do they quarrel over whose favourite food has been cooked and whose favourite food has been left out. Asif says, "I don't like coriander in my salad. But that doesn't mean that other family members must stop having coriander because of me. All I do is just separate the coriander from my salad."
Meal times are essentially times for the whole to unwind and relax. In pre-historic times tribes gathered around the fire at the end of the day enjoying a delicious meal. They shared the day's hunting stories and sang songs.
Nowadays with the joint family breaking up and members of nuclear families often having different work shifts family members may hardly ever meet at meal times. Nevertheless if you are really keen, you can make sure that the family meets regularly for dinner like the Maners do at least once or twice a week.
But if bitter fights break out, the entire family should meet for several sessions at psychologist's clinic before they meet at the dinner table. It is the maturity of the family members which may make dinner a time to look forward to or a sheer nightmarish experience.
