Would You Abort A Special Child?

The legal fact in India however remains that a woman can abort a special child if she is less than 21 weeks pregnant. An abortion without the husband's consent may however lead to problems in the marital life. Dr. Shefali Batra says, "It is best that the couple make a unanimous decision on this. Viewpoints on abortion may vary drastically in all human beings and can sometimes become an issue which may also lead to separation or divorce. Views on abortion today form a part of premarital-compatibility checks so as to assure no difference in opinion following marriage and conception. These views should certainly be discussed before marriage."

Gynaecologist Dr. Raj Kumar Shah however dissuades against aborting for minor birth defects, "Cases like club feet, cleft lip, cleft palate and urogenital defects are minor abnormalities and may be rectified after birth by surgery. In fact, club feet may not always even need surgery but may be corrected by physiotherapy and wearing the right shoes."

What if it's a serious birth defect? Make sure to do all the screening tests to detect abnormalities in the foetus. The organs of the baby can be seen clearly in 22 weeks but in India abortion isn't allowed so late. Keeping in mind that abortion in India is legal till 20 weeks; please don't miss the sonography on the 19th week. It may be possible to detect structural abnormalities between the 19th and 20th week.

What if you decide to have a child with serious physical / mental challenges? A special child will need special care. So adequately plan how to raise a special child in terms of health care, child care, education and finances. Simply praying and leaving it all up to God to take care of your special child and not making any practical plans whatsoever on how to raise your him, may just end up being detrimental for your child.

At the end of the day whether you choose to abort or not, either decision must be taken jointly by both parents and with much contemplation.
