Short, Fair And Handsome

Short, Fair And Handsome Should a guy hitch up with a taller woman?

If Mills & Boon are to be believed, women dream of hitching up with a man who is tall, dark and handsome. Although in India, you'd probably find many women swapping the 'dark' attribute with 'fair'! And what about height?

Well - what about height? Few women would go out with a man who is shorter than them. Just the same, not many men would be comfortable with a woman who is taller...

Short guy, tall woman = no romance!

''It kind of takes the romance out of dating,'' says Nikhil. He had the opportunity to date a woman who was taller, and gamely went ahead. But two dates on, he backed out. Why?

''We found ourselves in a weird (for me) situation. I was reaching out to help Nisha (his date) with her coat after a candle-lit dinner, but because she was taller, I kind of faltered in doing the needful. She didn't mind, but I guess you could say that I felt intimidated and insecure. If I'm falling short (literally) now, who can say what else I will not be able to do later?''

In a way, Nikhil has a point. He shivers at the thought of their first kiss - imagine trying to kiss a woman two inches taller without heels (with heels, make it anywhere from three to five inches)?

''Just the thought of me trying to reach up to her kind of takes the romance out of the situation - it would be more like a joke!'' he reckons.

Should a woman literally look up to a guy?

Fact is - most guys like to feel physically stronger than their woman. Women, in turn, like the sense of security they feel when out with a big guy. Although height is just one physical attribute - falling short could take you out of your comfort zone...

Consider this scenario - you're trying to reach up for something in a tall cupboard. You can't reach the box (or whatever) so you look around for a stool. Just then, your wife breezes in, assesses the situation and hands you whatever you want.

Don't limit the pool

Now if you can anticipate feeling okay in such situations, and you are going out with a woman who is equally comfortable with your height difference, go for it! After all, finding the right mate is as it is, not the easiest of tasks nowadays - so if you're compatible in other aspects, your height difference shouldn't be a deterrent.

It all boils down to what kind of guy you are? And of course, what kind of woman you're dating... society has established certain norms that suggest a normal couple is one where the guy is taller than the girl. But if a little role reversal doesn't freak you out, you should feel comfortable making the next move.

Like Rishi and Sumisha. "All my growing up life I desperately wanted to be tall, and a model," says Sumisha, "Then those two dreams came true, and I met this guy who is three inches shorter than me, but the most wonderful person. He treats me like a princess. We have the craziest fun times together. Rishi is the man of my dreams...Well - apart from his height."

Two years down the line, when Rishi felt that Sumisha and he were ready for the next step, he proposed. She was over the moon and of course accepted.
