Re-Marrying A Divorced Spouse
|
"My husband and I were very happy for twenty years; unfortunately then we got married."
"Love is a phase of temporary insanity that can be cured by marriage."
These are just some of the many lines uttered that mock the institution of marriage. Of course most of the time they are taken as a joke. But as we know, almost all the jokes are born from real life stories.
And there are too many jokes and hence true stories to deny the possibility that matrimony can be the most powerful antidote to romance, and sometimes love too.
Still, hard statistics don't prevent lovers from getting married. And then, they somehow adjust to each other's, hitherto unknown and sometimes not very lovable qualities. Life goes on.
But the problem with Ketki was, even after marriage, she continued expecting Alan to be a romantic lover. Naturally she was in for disappointment. Five years of shared life and one child later, they decided to separate.
The story doesn't end here. About two years later, they decided to remarry. Each other.
Of course they are not the first couple in the history to do this. There are quite a few who marry, divorce and then marry the same person again. The question for an outsider would be, "Why do they do it?" Of course the reasons vary from person to person.
Some people may find the idea of remarrying the divorced spouse, very romantic. But Ketki, the once incurable romantic says candidly that love is not the only factor here. "When I walked away from our marriage, I had thought that being free and independent again would be nice. What I failed to see was there is a vast difference between being a single woman and a single mother. Naturally I was not planning to be single forever, but every time a new guy appeared on the horizon, my son got upset. He wouldn't create a scene, but would look and act so miserable that it would make me feel guilty. And every time he is unhappy or angry he calls up his dad. That would make it worse."
During the divorce proceedings, Ketki's husband Alan didn't fight to get his son's custody. His only request was he should be allowed to keep in touch with the boy. At that time Ketki didn't see any reason to oppose. She could understand Alan's feelings.
