Do One Nice Thing - It's Addictive!
|
When our mothers taught us that the joy of giving is greater than the joy of receiving, this is possibly exactly what they meant.
Meet Debbie Tenzer, founder of DoOneNiceThing.com
Debbie Tenzer started looking for nice things to do every Monday to counter the ''Monday Blues'', and she got hooked. Mondays are the toughest days of the week for most people. So Debbie figured the best way to make Mondays better is to Do One Nice Thing every Monday!
Debbie picks up One Nice Thing to do every Monday and posts it on her website. Nice-a-holics from over 77 countries around the world log on and pitch in with whatever help they can. Since the website began in 2005, Debbie's collected over 70 TONS of school supplies (pencils, erasers, books, stationery) for kids in Afghanistan. 3000+ blankets have been sent to homeless people in Iraq. And hundreds and thousands of toys and books have been donated to kids around the world.
What is uniquely different about DoOneNiceThing is that Debbie asks everyone to make just a small effort. Send in a few pencils if nothing else to some needy kids.
That's certainly doable.
That doesn't require you to give hours and days of your precious time.
And it doesn't require you to stretch your wallet very far.
When I read about D1NT in the Times Of India a few weeks ago, it immediately struck a cord within me. For years now I've spoken often about wanting to help children and people who are less fortunate than me. Yet, I have been sadly amiss in converting intention to action.
DoOneNiceThing gave me exactly the right opportunity to convert my intentions into actions. I went out. Bought a hundred pencils, a hundred erasers and 25 boxes of crayons. INR 650 in all. I now have all the goodies packed and ready to be shipped.
Then I decided to do more. By using my role as Editor of Shaaditimes.com, I decided to try and mobilize the over hundred thousand readers who log on to the website regularly.
This is your chance to Do One Nice Thing every Monday. It is your chance to give to millions of little kids around the world for whom a pencil represents hope - the chance to get an education, the chance to live a better life.
Post a message and keep an eye out for what you can do. We hope to get together with Debbie and find an underprivileged school every Monday that you can be nice to.
In the meanwhile, be nice to the next person you meet. It feels great!
Note: Starting next week, every Monday, we will be posting details of a charity or a cause you can join help.
