Whose money is it anyway?
|
Indirect examples were given of those daughters-in-law who gave their whole salary cheque in ma-in-law's hands. So many good things could be done in the house, if only Anjoli could divert her money flow in this direction.
In no way could it be called harassment for money, but subtle messages reached Anjoli that her mother should stop expecting help from her. According to good old Indian traditions, they should be giving, not taking from the daughter. It was not long before the whole issue exploded out in open.
Anjoli who in ordinary circumstances is a mild natured woman proved to be very headstrong on this issue. She flatly said that her old mother and kid brother still needed her and she couldn't give more in this house than what she was already giving. Wasn't her husband contributing too?
What followed was an outright war. Sanjeet's parents refuse to talk to Anjoli and bemoan the fact that their son is henpecked and has gone to the 'other side'.
Anjoli and Sanjeet continue to support her mother and brother but there is an underlying strain that has started to show. Anjoli's mother and brother, completely unaware of the chaos in Anjoli's life, thank God everyday for her and Sanjeet and his understanding parents.
What do you think?
- Is it wrong for Anjoli to support her mother and brother?
- Is Sanjeet henpecked?
- Are Sanjeet's parents being unreasonable? Don't they have a right to a better life from Anjoli's earnings?
- Should Anjoli tell her mother and brother about the whole situation so they are prepared for the future?
