No laughing matter
Can men laugh at themselves?
|
As soon as Shishir left that night, Ronit turned on Tara. "Do you mind explaining your behaviour today?"
"Huh?" Tara looked at him.
"You said in front of Shishir that I am lacking as a man."
"I never said it." Tara protested.
"You did. Indirectly, when we were talking about wife swapping."
"Oh, I was just joking."
"It seems nowadays your sense of humour is working overtime," Ronit said with clenched teeth.
"You should be the last person to mind it." Tara smiled.
"Means?"
"I mean you always complain that women, especially me, lack a sense of humour. We can't take a joke, we can't laugh at our shortcomings, we can't..."
"Enough." Said Ronit angrily.
"Why?" Tara asked innocently. "Didn't you say such things?"
"I did, but it didn't mean..." Ronit spluttered.
"What you didn't mean?" Tara was all smiles.
Ronit couldn't think of a fitting reply and stormed out of the room.
Many women must have gone through a similar experience as Tara. Men love to joke about women, especially their wives. Listen to the jokes at parties and in stage programmes. Some well known people, like a great music director(now deceased) who was famous for his jokes on his wife, as much as his music. The good lady smiled each time the husband made fun of her clothes, her looks, her poor knowledge of English. People admired his sense of humour. But don't you think that it was his wife who had it? It is not easy to be a butt of jokes all the time and still smile.
If a woman takes an offence at something the husband says, he would immediately lament the fact that women are sporting enough to take jokes. When a man makes fun of his wife, it is his sense of humour. But if a woman does it, it is an insult.
Of course not all men are alike. There are some who can really laugh when their wives poke fun at them. But unfortunately this tribe is quite small. Let's hope we see more of them.
